Spielberg's Tintin

Hmmmm....

I think Tintin is popular pretty much everywhere on earth EXCEPT the US. (Maybe if he wore tights?) So it's not too weird for Spielberg to go for something like this: international sales are huge for US movies, so he's sort of pre-emptively striking.

And the comics have been pretty widely available here for the last 5 years or so.

Tintin has a lot of fans in Australia too. Pretty much every school and public library used to have Herge's books on their shelves. For me, Tintin was always more interesting than Astreix.

I dig Asterix on a different level than Tintin, but the influence of both is astronomical in the world of European BD. You can see how the recent Asterix films would have difficulty finding a North American theatrical audience outside of Quebec.

Tintin's obviously got a following in the UK as well, so between the original french which sees distribution in Quebec, and the commonwealth trickle-down, us toque wearers know him. Didn't most of the Chapters Indigo kids sections have that Giant Red Rocket Tintin book display at one time in the past decade or so?

Given how he's not as well known in the US, it kind of surprises me that Spielberg took it on, but I suspect it will do boffo box office Internationally. He's popular in Australia and certain parts of Asia as well.

Brilliant casting with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as Thomson and Thompson.

I know the name, and can picture the character, but that's about it.

I wonder how this film will do here in the US? I'm sure it will be big internationally.

This is the project that kept Peter Jackson from working on The Hobbit for several years. Motion Capture is from WETA on this film.

Interesting how they real'd up the comic designs for the film. Weird.... kinda creepy.... but interesting.
