In regards to JLU, (and at the risk of opening up yet another avenue of discussion), IIRC, Dwayne McDuffie had no idea what to do with Aquaman

I really injoyed his 2 part Origional story Arc on Justice League.

until Alan Burnett handed him over along with Soloman Grundy and Doctor Fate and said "The Defenders".

Before the Silver Age run, Aquaman was a steady feature in More Fun and then Adventure until he got a solo book since his creation in the 40's. So its not like he can't hold down a spot.

It's one thing to hold down a spot as a steady feature in an anthology title, it's another to actually be a sales driving headliner like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman is what I am saying. Let' be honest, if Aquaman was the main cover draw, he would have been headlining his own title in the Golden Age.

Although let's be fair as well, Aquaman was never a strong seller even before Crisis, and what was the origin run of the Silver Age solo title really? Sixty issues? And you can't say that that title didn't have it's share of revisions and death and status quo shakeups.

Maybe. It used to be the standard every three, 'cos the majority of the fans would move on to other interests after that. (And those that remained just sort of accepted things.) Since the late 80's you've had an ever-growing group of "educated" fans who know ALL the old stories.... and since the 90's a lot of THEM have become pretty particular about exactly how THEIR book should be handled. Sadly, they've been the group the companies have been playing off for the last 10 years or so. Green Arrow is a good example of the redo; bon-vivant, ninja, sullen hero.... he’s done the tour.

I think that’s the best way to look at it. There’s nothing wrong with NOT reading a book. You can always come back to it if it gets good later on; and if you HAVE to get them all, there’s plenty of places to buy back issues, reprints or compilations from.

Well.... they appeal to adults who are superhero fans, but they suffer from a lot of things that keep non-comic fans from getting into the books.

To get back to the Aquaman topic for a bit....do you know how many #1s Aquaman has had since Crisis on Infinite Earths (back in '86)....counting mini-series, one-shots and ongoings?

Besides being an archivists nightmare, it goes to show that DC has not had a handle on what makes Arthur Curry tick in a looooong time....Constant reboots, rewrites and halfassed jumpstarts have damaged the character to the point that only a Geoff Johns probably feels comfortable removing the radioactivity from the character. Alas, once he stops writing/guiding the direction of Aquaman, we'll probably be in the same boat once again....

Given the history of how these things work, I think a reboot every twenty years or so isn't necessarily a bad thing. He wasn't always Arthur Curry, son of lighthouse keeper either right? Golden Age origin was quite different from what I remember and it wasn't until 1960 or so that he was even named Arthur Curry.

I think the fortunate part of "Orin" is that Peter David managed to inherit the concept and build quite a strong storyline around it for the sixty plus issues (and Mini and Atlantis Chronicles) he had relative control. He also managed to resolve it with the Arthur Curry, son of the lighthouse keeper, which in my mind keeps most of the silver age in continuity while opening up an entire realm of mythology to build upon.

I actually had really high hopes for Kurt Busiek's run, but that didn't quite gel together, which is a shame given how good his Conan was and how well "Conan of the Sea" can potentially work for Aquaman.

Many sloppy stuff like that totally takes me out of a story. Do some research people. With countless reference books, websites, blogs, etc at their fingertips, there is no excuse for those kind of slip-ups nowadays.

And everyone has forgotten The Flash Snaping Proffessor Zoom's Neck too...

This very fact is mentioned in the Green Arrow Fall & Rise Special....however sloppy writing/editing has Barry stating that he did it because Iris was in danger. WRONG! Iris was already killed by Zoom....Barry later snapped Zoom's neck to save his current fiance Fiona...and then the trial came out of that....where he was found Not Guilty.

Arguing past comic stories is like arguing past storylines on General Hospital.

The serial nature of comics lend themselves to stories that are well received or not, and are either folded into the mythos or are forgotten. Evil twins, deaths, resurrections, alliances, enemies, etc...

If the story has legs, it'll be collected quickly (like Rebirth, Sinestro War, etc) and I'll pick it up then. If not, no harm no foul on my part.

I recognize the soap opera nature (after so many years reading comics you'd be blind not to do so) so I know I can sit a story out and come back with one to my liking shows up. I mean, in the end the rubberband can only stretch so much before it snaps back into shape.

Need I mention a certain SUPERBABY being thrown out with the bathwater?

I have not read the storyline yet, waiting on the TPB but I don't have any issue with him killing the villain. Much as I love the vast world of villains in comics, it never made sence to me that they are always left alive. Okay, Batman does not kill so he always imprisons Joker. but you don't think one of the other vigilantes in gotham would kill in an instant. I don't want to see beloved characters sudenly become killers but comics do get repetitive when Batman has to chase down joker for the umpteenth time.

As far as Aquaman and the David run, i did read the first year or so but the whole change to the character just did not fit my vision of Aquaman, which was 2 handed hero in the green and orange that he always wore and will again when he comes back this year.
