James garner: "tank" sullivan from "space cowboys"!

    Hi, Everyone!

Several years back, I made a Jim Rockford figure

Hello, Everyone. Here is my latest creation...one I've wanted to do for quite awhile. I never watched The Rockford Files as a kid, but I saw a few stray episodes a few years ago on TV Land and I really liked the show. I got all the DVD sets (I'll post my review of Season 5 in the General Buzz in a moment) and I've really

and had planned to quickly follow him up with Bret Maverick. Well....that didn't happen. *laughs* Instead, time went by and I made other custom figures but thought about Maverick. I may still do him at some point, but I *so* love James Garner's portrayal of Tank Sullivan in Space Cowboys that I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make a figure of him. Tank had, in my opinion, the best lines in the film. The "bench press scene" in the gym is priceless when Tank says "I'm going to go back to my room now and cry." LOL!

I wanted Tank to wear his Team Dadealus jacket and hat and Hawaiian shirt combo, but also really liked the astronaut suit also. I decided to do a two-pack carded figure (THANK YOU Figures Toy Company for selling the two pack clamshells!) with two dressed bodies and one head that could pop from figure to figure (MUCH easier than changing clothing). I used one Type S figure and one EMCE swivel bicep figure for each set. I made two sets of figures: one for myself and one as a gift. I'm not sure yet whether to use the tray inserts in both sets of figures; one right now has the insert and the others have LaserMego stands. I included Tank's little Hawaiian girl dashboard figure (I have a smaller one on order which I may substitute if I prefer it) and his sunglasses. I made the card using screenshots from the DVD of the film and made patches for Tank's jacket also. The head sculpts are from the same mold but I think I did a better job on one relative to the other when painting. The eyebrows are a bit more subtle on one of them.

    Thanks for looking!

      ^Thanks, Grim!

I added the link to the post above to the original Rockford post. Got Custom of the Week for him! That's never happened to me. LOL!

Yep...I have the mold, but frankly I'm better now at sculpting than I was in 2008 so there are parts of Jim's face (chin) that I'd rework. In any case, you flatter me with the compliment! Thank you! I typically don't sell my stuff, though. Purely for my own therapy...er....enjoyment. :D

Great looking figure. James Garner is the coolest. And I love how your customization projects take on unconventional subject matter.

Rockford Files was one of my favorite detective shows, the figure really came out nice,
I remember my uncle had the exact same car and I loved riding in it.

I'll have the theme song in my head the rest of the day, thanks.

I never saw Space Cowboys, maybe I'll look for it on cable and check it out.

I clicked the link and all I can say is WOW!!! Definitely a well deserved COTW! If Mego had made a Jim Rockford, that is how they would have done it.

I am a huge Rockford Files fan from its original run and I try to catch it on MeTV whenever I can (they moved it to late nights during the week, not good for a first shifter). Jimbo is on my customs to-do list and I haven't figured what to do for his head. Your sculpt is perfect and I would love to get a cast of it so, if you feel like helping a fellow Rockford fan out please PM me and we can work something out. But, if not, I understand and respect your position on the matter.

Thank you for sharing your great customs!

I honestly thought this was going to be custom for this movie...which yes, I saw in theater...and could not believe someone else did...but alas...

^ Heheh...yeah, I thought of that after I posted the figure (can't edit the title once it's posted). Weird that his name was Tank and he was in a film called "Tank"! I may have to do that figure, too!

And, yeah...I saw it, too. :D
