Pewter may be easier to deal with than aluminum: http://www.rotometals.com/Pewter-Alloys-s/23.htm

A 8" scale aluminum hand for Dr. Steel would be very cool!

I did a lot of research on this today. The two things I found that don't cost hundreds to "try out" are as follows:

Option 1: Alclad chrome paint for models, must be airbrushed
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/321186026786...84.m1423.l2649

Option 2: Plating on plastic and other non conductive materials, DIY kit on Ebay or you can buy a booklet
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Plating-on-P...item4ab7dd8779

Option 3: Casting parts in aluminum, sounds hard but it isn't if you are technically inclined, very cheap to build all of the equipment and melt scrap aluminum, finished product can be polished and sealed or chrome plated with DIY kit
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lt18HD-eTX4

I know what you're thinking, anyone can just browse crap off the internet. Well I'm gonna do the aluminum casting and I'm gonna do it soon. I'll keep you posted

i re-watched this the other day.
I could be quite wrong, but they didn't show the first step - the painting of the parts.
The video showed this water blast reveal of chrome...yea, really cool.
But over the years, in the prop forum I have be in, I have seen people quest for good chrome methods. Some can do it, some can't.
    The first steps are critical.
The piece has to be really clean, really smooth. Any dirt or scratches, and they get magnified once chromed.

Someday we'll give this a whirl. Someday.

I'm sure Dave Lee would be interested in this as well--it's awesome!

I have several things I could use it on right now...
