    Journey: Revelation

On June 3rd the newest album from the newest incarnation of Journey was released. It's a three disc set and is available only at Wal-Mart. The retail price wis less than $12.00, $11.88 I think.

"Revelation" is the 3rd post-Steve Perry album after 2001's "Arrival" and 2005's "Generations". There was also a mini-album in 2002 entitled "Red 13" that contained 5 tracks. "Revelation" features the debut of new lead singer Arnel Pineda. Pineda was the lead singer for a Journey cover band and the story goes that Neal Schon watched some of Pineda's concert footage on YouTube and hired him to replace Jeff Scott Soto, who was ousted from Journey after a 6 month stint.

The first disc contains 11 tracks. 10 tracks are all-new with track 12 being an instrumental. Track 5 is an updated version of "Faith in the Heartland" (from the "Generations" album) sung by Pineda. After listening to these new songs for the past week, I have to say I really like them. While I was a fan of Steve Augeri's vocals, the previous 2 albums didn't have that Journey sound save for 4 songs. "Revelation" is the best of the post-Perry era Journey albums. I think I'd even have to say that this album may be better than 1996's Grammy nominated Journey reunion album "Trial by Fire".

The second disc contains 11 tracks of classic Journey songs as sung by Pineda. After listening to these I go back and forth on whether or not I like them. Sometimes they sound true to the originals but then they sound like a cover/tribute band in a bar, which is to be expected from Pineda. Steve Augeri, Steve Perry's replacement, had a better handle on the classic songs. And while I have heard very little of Soto's (Augeri's replacement) Journey, he had a stronger grasp on the classic songs as well as addding a harder rock edge to them.

The third disc is actually a DVD of a Journey concert with Pineda. I haven't watched it yet but plan on doing so when I have some free time.

"Revelation" debuted at #5 on the Billboard charts selling 105,000 units during its first week.

3 discs for $12, you can't go wrong.

I saw Journey in concert with Steve Augeri and could have sworn he was actually Steve Perry!

Might have to give this disc a try.

My brother said the same thing. I have a DVD from a 2001 Journey concert with Augeri and as cliched as it sounds, if you close your eyes you would think it was Steve Perry singing.

I am enjoying the new cd. It's not up there with "Escape" or "Infinity" to my ears but it's definitely a solid album nonetheless.

I really like Pineda's vocals, he's doing a good job. But I'm a bit surprised at how everyone is making such a big deal about him sounding so "authentic" to the Perry stuff, because I thought Augeri's vocals were pretty amazing too! He sounded (and even looked a lil' bit) like Perry on that 2001 live DVD, I was blown away. But anyhow, I'm really looking forward to seeing them with Arnel, from everything I've heard I expect their show to be pretty killer.

My Chief, who is about 6 years older than me and not a Journey fan, came up to me the other day and mentioned how he saw a commercial for the Journey concert series on VH-1 Classic and it showed "the new guy". He said that "he sounds just like Steve Perry". I don't hear it at all. When Pineda sings those Perry songs I don't think he sounds like Perry. Augeri did though.

Yes, that price point is very attractive. I haven't purcahsed a new CD in a while but I recall that one CD usually goes for $15 or so.

yup easily $15 unless its the first weeks sales.
it shows what the record companys should be doing
lowering the price and giving you more for your money
theres no way a new journey cd would enter the top 5 if it was a single new cd and $15

Being a lead vocalist in a band I get really aggravated when I see famous bands trying to carry on without their call to fame lead vocalist.
I think when a band loses the singer that brought them to fame, they should change the name of the band. On rare occasions it works out, hence Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.

Journey without Steve Perry just is not the same. Journey's fame was based on the powerful vocals of Steve Perry. Just listen to all those classic hits.

                    What next?
A new Led Zeppelin album with some Robert Plant clone on vocals?

Jimmy Page has the sense to not do it. I just wish other bands would do the same.
You say you like this new Journey album? Cool.

I am sure the current members of Journey need to eat. They have to make a living and if living off their old band name is how they do it to feed their mouths, then go for it I guess.

I'll take my Journey as it came with Steve Perry. I got the old albums when I want to hear the old songs. I listen to those.

                    My two cents.

                        Very good stuff!

The new Journey cd is real good! Yes he does sound like Steve Perry. I like how they re-did the greatest hits. So far i only heard 3 new songs but those too are good stuff.

Yep for 12 bucks its worth it.

                        Where is Perry these days?

What happened to Augeri? I remember hearing him and thinking they got the best possible replacement for Perry.

Oh and Journey did pretty much rename themselves once, post-Perry,...weren't they Bad English, more or less?
