Swamp Thing Big Head step-by-step painting process

I'll be posting pics of every stage along the way until the bust is completed. The final coat of base color has been applied, and the eyes blocked in with a very light bluish grey.
Once they are reddened with capillaries and soft tissue they should look quite realistic. The main key to painting realistic eyes is NEVER, EVER use white!
I always do a color test to see how paint colors photograph versus how they appear with the naked eye. The ultimate goal is to achieve something that looks right both ways.

    Looking baddass!

I’m working on a lifesized Alien Warrior wall head myself.

    Nothing but time at home...

Both eyes finished...the tricky part is making sure the gaze from both eyes lines up naturally. I used some screen caps from the Blu-ray for reference and Dick Durock's eyes were quite bloodshot,
no doubt due to irritation caused by sweat and makeup.

Incredible! Looks like a publicity photo from the movie.

I've begun layering color onto the head and painting the moss...working in small areas at a time. I'm trying to maintain a consistent look throughout while keeping plenty of varying shades of greens and browns.
The suit appears "dirty" onscreen as the deep lines and crevices are actually lighter in color than the rest of the suit. This goes against the usual shading techniques.

I can't wait to see this finished, but at the same, this is so fun to watch the daily progress.

It's the face I make when my daughter leaves an empty Cheez Its box in the pantry instead of throwing it out.

Face is now finished! Starting on the roots and moss!
I wanted some nice rich layers of brown for the roots to contrast with all of the green.
