Spiderman rights could be heading back to Marvel Studios...

... in a few years. Interesting report. It really sounds like Sony is not getting the financial return it needs to validate keeping the property and that selling it back may be more profitable with their current financial crisis. Here's the story...

This article can't even get its facts right. DD returned from Fox not Sony.

Return? They've made billions on Spidey, and it's what's kept them alive in some ugly times. The problem is Sony as an overall company has been in flux for a number of years. The deal is if Sony sells/mergers the studio, which has been murmured about since since '11, then the rights revert back. For example, if Sony and WB merged that would create a conflict of interest and the rights head back.

Outside of that, it's about Marvel having access to Spidey for the Secret Wars/Infinity Gauntlet hybrid which comes around A3. That's been the long-term goal for years and surprisingly the Contest of Champions game gave it up. You can see the early formation of it in Superhero Squad episodes.

I think the hangup is Garfield. Marvel is bent on making their Spidey Miles Morales, but Garfield is still locked in, IIRC. It's just as Lady Thor will replace Hemsworth and Mackie will take over Cap, but by that point, they won't have any stand alone Cap movies. He'll be in Avengers movies and TV.

EDIT: Sony will get a percentage for whatever Spidey is used for. That's probably another issue for Disney/Marvel.

Yeah, they screwed that up with Strange or Ghost Rider.
