Pod Stallions 22: Store Bought Costumes

As the title suggests, episode 22 delves into the wonderful world of Halloween costumes but none of that "Home made with your mom's love" kinda junk, this talks about the good old "smock and mask" stuff you got at places like Woolco or Kresge's.

In what is probably our most visual episode, Jason and Brian go through the many catalogs on Plaidstallions from companies such as Collegeville, Ben Cooper and Kusan.

From deep discussions about Grizzly Adams, The Village People, Hee-Haw, Tattoo from Fantasy Island and of course, Flash Gordon. This one doesn't leave many 70s stones unturned.
Look for cameos by your favourite Star Wars characters Yada, Darth Vadar and Baba Fett.

You got it Brian. It came through my iTunes again fine.

Well, that was a lot of fun. I don't remember Collegeville costumes as a kid. I thought Ben Cooper was the only maker of Halloween stuff. I remember getting all of my costumes from Ben Franklin, so it was a double Ben affair. I think Superman was the first costume I recall, but it had a red "Lone Ranger" type mask instead of Superman's face. I still have my cloth Batman playsuit that I wore one year. I remember being Spider-Man, and I wore the Ben Cooper Captain America Mask with my own costume cobbled together from my Underoos Cap shirt and a homemade posterboard shield.

I had that horrible rubber Ben Cooper Batman mask. I was a bit older, I think maybe 8 or so? I found it at Begley's Drug Store. I seem to recall seeing the Spider-Man mask too. Looking around today, even the cheapest of cheapo rubber masks look better than these things. I was cracking up when Jason said they looked to be made from human skin!!!

As far as ideas for part 2, I saw where someone posted on the PS site you should cover Halloween TV specials. That sounds like a good idea to me.

Another fun one. I remember vividly from the early 1980s being in a drugstore that had Halloween costumes of Father Murphy with Merlin Olsen. I cannot imagine the kid who got stuck with that one.

                Looking forward to the discussion.
The download now directs to episode #21 rather than 22, but I nabbed 22 from Listen Now.

Listened yesterday, the first half hour going to work and the rest coming home. Great show and you guys are nailing it with topics I forgot about! I had the Spidey and I think The Fonz at one point during my childhood. I remember seeing a ton of others. Most notably a friend and his brother had the Superman costume with red mask. Got a pic of that somewhere as well as a classic pic of me in the Spidey outfit and one of my cousins in a homemade Wonder Woman costume with tin foil for braclets, a towel for a cape, and a Ben Cooper belt (presumbaly from my Spidey outfit as a tiara)

Another great podcast on a subject I know nothing about so it was all new to me. I'm glad Brian mentioned the Robert 240 lunch box. The lunch box was planned and the show was canceled before production started. Only trade show examples were made.

On Friday, I was on the phone with a friend of mine and 240-Robert came up. We talked about that lunch box. It sold on ebay a few years ago for over$5000. They never hit the market.

I'm not especially a lunch box maniac, but I think it is a beauty.

And, I had that "Emergency! + 4" costume.
