Crazy food questions that bug me...

    Does anybody know...

Are English muffins just called muffins in England? And if so, what do they call "regular" muffins?

Same question for French toast...is it just toast in France? What do they call toasted bread?

What about Italian dressing? When you're in Italy, do you just ask for dressing?

And why is dressing also called stuffing?!

    AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!

Well, in my house the homemade stuff is dressing, and the Stove Top stuff, (which I use) is stuffing.

Before you ask, we call Canadian bacon "back bacon", we also have peameal bacon which is similar but is brined. Also, I haven't eaten it since I was a kid, regular bacon is much better.

Pretty sure English Muffins are Crumpets in England.

        And Australians call Shrimp Prawns.

French Toast is "pain perdu" in France (and Belgium). Literally, "lost bread, left-over bread".
Which makes sense, because you use slightly older bread to make it, otherwise it just falls apart.
          Traditionally topped with brown sugar.

Which brings us to the main event: French fries. They're NOT French, they're Belgian. Just like Hercule Poirot, fries are Belgian. Just because French was the upper class language in Belgium at that time, doesn't make them French.
We eat them with mayo on them. Please feel free to add a colorful Travolta/Pulp Fiction quote to this statement.

Belgian waffles are called...waffles in Belgium.
          Surprise!!!
They are nothing like the sort of waffles you eat in the US and call "Belgian Waffles". They are so light and airy and crunchy, you just sprinkle a little powdered sugar on top and voilà! They are like an Angel floating over your tongue....

I already had that one covered Marty.

So Pulp Fiction was accurate, people in Europe put mayo on fries? I think I've read somewhere about Norwegians putting mustard on fries, that's even stranger. And don't get me started about poutine!

Damn kid must have been Norwegian! I usually use ketchup on fast food fries, but fresh cut fries from a chip wagon always get vinegar for me, it just seems right.
