I have said this a few times already but I live 5 miles outside of Burkittsville, Maryland where the Blair Witch project supposedly took place. What seemed to grip a lot of people and why it made so much money was the whispering that this really happened. They even had a promotional show before the movie launched interviewing police, residents, etc. and at no time said the story was fabricated. I knew it was fake from the getgo because I have heard all of the local legends and there are some in Burkittsville but no Blair Witch. In fact, the only two scenes I think they even shot in Burkittsville was the town sign and a scene in an old cemetary right in town. What most people didn't hear is the chaos this movie caused for this small town. People were coming in from all over, stealing town signs, robbing gravestones from the cemetary and just creating problems for a small sleepy little town that wasn't prepared to deal with the problem.
