VW Bus project - Mego-esque Jokermoile

I bought my 71 bus a little over a year ago and have driven it pretty much as is (with some minor repairs and care).

Now I am ready to start restoration / customization.

I want to do a Mego Jokermobile BUT -the design is too simplistic. I want to keep some elements and work in some other classic images.

The body will be a similar green color. The roof will be white with an image painted on it. Right now I am planning to paint the Joker card concept from Jerry Robinson. I do no have a pop top. Most people will not see the top because it is above most of our eye level.

The front I think I will go withe the Mego Smile -but I may use a red target with Jokers face as seen on the Mego Rims(basically the 'O' from the Joker #1 issue)

The rear I think the whole Joker title from Joker #1.

On the side some "Pow" "Bam" things like the Jokermobile but actually fonts from the 66 show.

I actually have a couple dents that i was going to fix but now I think I am going to paint POWs over them.

The white flower I want to incorporate somewhere.

I will post ics here as I go.

Does anyone have a good front shot of the Mego bus?

Does anyone have one for sale?????? It was the one thing I was hoping to find at the Meet that I didn't.

    paint ideas

Ok, this is going to be cool! I look forward to seeing it's progress and even more to seeing it finished.

          Best of luck with it!

The bus was $4000. It came from California with complete service records and ran great as is. It has nearly 300,000 miles on it. I am prepping it for paint now. That will take a bit so it will be a while before I can post it painted.

Growing up, our family had a 72 or so loaf built as a Westy overnighter like yours. Very cool to see a modern family enjoying the sane thing.
I have a fondness for split window buses and have owned several over the years. My current one is a 1966 Sundial camper. I had a 64 deluxe that I considered giving the Batlab treatment, but I sold that one last year when we moved.

What a fun idea--can't wait to see it.

If you can drive it to MM'15, Brue, you should do a Joker costume & I promise to bring my Penguin one.

I have sanded most of it down. I have stripped most of it. I still need to remove a few windows and weld a couple of rust spots.
I posted a few more photos -nothing that looks jokeresque.

I'll add some pics this weekend, but it is not a ton of mego fun at this point. -Just stripping the bus down and prepping for paint.

I would like to weld some metal into a couple of bad spots and pull the engine this weekend.

Paint is hopeful before winter but may not happen until late spring. I don't have sufficient heat in my garage to paint after September.

It is ready for the white paint - interior and roof.

The body will be the Mego Joker Van green.

Though the roof of the Mego is orange, I don't think that will look as good full scale.
I am painting the original joker sketch on the roof. the white also helps a vehicle with no AC

i am doing orange curtains to maintain the color scheme.
