    Spectra?

A local shop has several booths, and one has old dolls in it. Besides noticing some Sailor Moon toys today for the first time, I've noted for a while a Spectradoll and a couple of outfits, all boxed. (These are the closest to action figures there.) I vaguely remember this line from years ago. Am I right that this was a kind of hybrid between She-Ra and Barbie, in that it had an SF angle (the boxed Spectra doll comes with a robot) but is also a fashion doll? The boxed doll itself is marked $25; is that a valid price (recognizing price is in the eye of the collector)?

    Thanks,
    Hugh H. Davis

$25 is the right price for Spectra MIB. Spectra is the most common in the set. The Spectra line never really took off and is kind of obscure these days. They are uncommon but not really in any demand either. Still nice dolls.

I have a boxed Spectra playset somewhere buried in a tote. Odd looking scifi based Barbie doll.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

I think the only playset released was the Buffatron. It was this weird bed/bathtub looking thing.

And I just remembered, Spectra came in two versions. With and without her little robot dog spark. The one with the pet is less common.

These sound kind of interesting--do they precede Bratz & Monster High? I'll check ebay...

Ach, I see: she's like a chromed Barbie. Would make a neat Bulletgirl custom for GI Joe.

Spectra came out in the mid 80s. Probably to compete with Jem. I still have my Spectra from when I was a kid around here somewhere.

Tonka made a similar line called Aurora.

It was the Buffatron. I'll post when I find it in the next couple of years. At first I thought it was some sci-fi/Family Affair toy.

There's five dolls in the set. The male doll is Tom Comet.

Here's some pics and info on the line.

Spectra was produced by Mattel in 1987. The 11 inch dolls were made in the Barbie mould and had metallic bodies with human coloured heads, colourful hair and made-up faces. There was also one set of fashion wear and a few playsets.

Cindy got a couple of these a few months ago. I had never heard of them before. I'm slightly disturbed by their human heads, and shiny metal bodies. Like Barbie was assimilated by the Borg...or the Silverhawks!
