That crossed my mind too. But it's not fun and colorful like Wizard of Oz and where the Walton's had an old pickup truck and General store, Barbie had Corvette and a Dreamhouse. Mego obviously put a lot of work and thought into line. But it still strikes me as a bit of a misfire because it not exactly fun to play.
Good point. I do think there was very briefly a fad in media to go back to simpler times. The Waltons (although I wouldn't say WWII was a "simple" time), Little House on the Prairie, Holly Hobby was everywhere...maybe Mego was trying to tap that market.

In fact, I wonder why no one made dolls of Little House on the Prairie?

Yes, I remember that particular part of the zeitgeist very well, and I'd guess that you're spot on in Mego's attempting to cash in on it in some way. But, as Werewolf said, this kind of thing was probably quite hard to market to children effectively. I was forced to sit through those shows as a young kid, as my family liked them, but I think I would have rather been subjected to water torture if you'd asked me at the time. I did like what I guess would be considered the more "macho" example of this trend, Grizzly Adams, but I wouldn't have bought Waltons merchandise under any circumstances.

Little House dolls were really never produced by anyone? That seems almost shocking. Despite my distaste for it, it seemed to be a huge phenomenon for years.

Knickerbocker made a couple of dolls. I think two. They were soft body dolls with vinyl heads and hands. Which actually makes more sense then a full line of action dolls like Mego did for the Waltons. Just because a show is popular doesn't mean it will translate to fun toys. I can pretend to be John Boy writing his novel! Wheee!! To heck with Barbie and GI JOE.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

For some reason this one never appealed to me as a kid but now I highly appreciate the cool factor. Great piece.

Just viewed the proto version and it's way more menacing than the released version. Would be great to release the proto version considering it would fit right in with all the underground art toys.

Now this version would be hilarious to make:

I never knew of Ampzilla as a kid and it does look a bit silly. But its still pretty neat.

Nice! I always thought Starsky was a good sculpt, but Hutch seemed "off."

I remember one time on an APES message board, a member thought that the Starsky and Hutch figures were simply Mego's unsold Burke and Virdon figures repackaged (I remember her saying something like "Ain't commerce grand")... I think it burst her bubble when she found out she had been displaying S&H as B&V for all that time...

That rumour floated around with toy dealers in the 80s. One reputable guy back then said he heard it from a Mego exec (!). The days before the internet were often laced with misinformation.
