    Matchbox Fighting Furies Commercial

This commercial reel has sat on my desk for over two years, it's been driving me mad to honest. It did not disappoint, even though I honestly don't recollect the Fighting Furies, seeing 70s sensation Mason Reese pimp this toy line is truly a highlight of my year, behold the original commercial for "The Kung Fu Adventure" from 1974:

The Fighting Furies is one of the most ignored toy lines of the 1970s, check out all their cool goodies at the Fighting Furies Archive

Is there supposed to be a YouTube link?
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

        Hmmmm....

So they got a 90 year old lady to do the ads?

Oh 1970's, with your weird hair and unfortunate sweaters....

That's funny, when I first viewed these my wife turned to me and said "Is that a kid? What is that?"

I explained Mason Reese to her and how his parents saved his money, so he's set for adulthood.

I guess I missed out on the Mason Reese phenomenon, although this commercial has solved a personal mystery for me.

I believe Reese was the basis for the bratty child star featured in a story in Superman #285, Mar. 1975. I encountered the story in Best of DC Blue Ribbon Digest # 25, June 1982. I often suspected Curt Swan based the kid on SOMEBODY, and it has to be Reese. The only image I could find was from the back cover of the digest, and Ross Andru doesn't capture the likeness like Swan. But now I'm pretty sure it was Reese!

I guess Matchbox thought this kid was exciting enough to sell this line, because it's kind of...dull for an action line.

I obtained the pirate in one of my bulk auctions many years ago. I always wondered who the heck that was. Mystery solved. And yes... That kid is a curious specimen indeed.

Thanks Brian. Yeah, I remember Mason Reese from the Dunkin Donuts Munchkins ad, the Byrd's Eye Thick and Frosty ad and the Smorgasbord commercial (was that the Underwood lunch meat spread?) Anyway, I guess someone saw cuteness in him. He still looks like that, but old w/ long grey hair and didn't grow much.

He seems to have retained his childhood looks, which would normally be an asset to a former child star.

I know I'm the only one who probably cares, but I scanned in some panels from the Superman story. The bratty child actor is named "Jason Fleece". I think we can consider this case closed!

Oh wow, I had all but completely forgotten about that kid 'til now. He freaked me out a bit when I was young, not even joking.
