I also used heavy duty cardboard boxes for my Dr. Strange and tombraider dioramas.
In both cases I used a thin sheet of wood the same size as the box for a base, scuffed up the bottom, peeled back the top layer of the cardboard flaps (to give a rougher surface) and glued them to the bottom of the wood base with plain old elmer's glue, making a very strong, secure bond.
both boxes were very thick, strong cardboard- the kind of box used to ship automotive oil in gallon sized containers (think mobil or castrol)
in fact, just modifying them took a very sharp exacto knife. for the tombraider dio I even applied drywall mud to the outside of the box!
