The ABS cleanup method has been juggled around as a trick, but our machine uses PLA - its properties are different.
As it stands right now, we are getting the .10 layer height consistently and the prints are coming out pretty nice - not smooth-as-glass, but considering it is laying a layer of melted PLA at 100 microns, well....lol....you can see the layers, and barely feel them with your fingernail.
The printed parts (now that we have the machine fixed and reliable) are good enough to paint.
It's not as fine as an Objet printer...but it's also comparing apples to oranges.
The makerbot is cheap - $2100 whereas the Objets (I think) are well over $15,000 for desktop models.
Give this stuff another 5 years....in five years time, we'll have already built a digital library of parts here at the boards and we'll look back and go wow...
