    Megabug Gladiators 1979 Catalog

Described by Kenner in 1979 as "Combat vehicles of the future....half insect, half machine" Megabug Gladiators were perhaps just too ahead of their time.

That's pretty much the only reason I can think of to justify why this cool toy line of insect tanks wasn't a hit with kids. Had it been spawned in the 1980s, Megabugs would have likely gotten an animated series to support the concept and been a bigger hit.

As it stands, it's one of those toylines that deserves more fanfare, mostly for being one of the most creative concepts of the decade.

I can't believe I've never heard of these! Did they actually get released? I would have absolutely loved these when I was a kid.

Maybe it's b/c I'm a girl, but I would have found those boring.

These are new to me as well. I definitely agree that these would have done much better in the 80s, as they begin to approach the Insecticions from Transformers and other similar lines.

I think they are cool now- but as a kid....I don't know, I think I would have preferred my vehicles to be vehicles and my bug-monsters to be monsters- not sure if the cross-over would have flown with me.

                Hmmmm....

Those are the awesomest things ever! I don't remember them from when I was a kid, although I had built a toy spider remarkably similar to the one here.

Ever since I"d heard of these a year or so back I've wanted to make Mego scaled ones. (To fight the Frankencopter; obviously.)

I had these as a kid--they are terrific!

The scorpion is my favorite, too.

I had the dragonfly and the scorpion as a kid. They are an awsome design and fun the play with. The dragonfly probably being my favorite.
