    RIP Playstation 2

Production of the PS2 has at long last been cancelled worldwide.

News of Sony ending PlayStation 2 production in Japan broke last month, but now Sony has confirmed that after 12 years, production of the console will be ending worldwide.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

    Hmmmm....

That seems kinda weird, considering the PS3's been around for six years or so. Does that mean the PS3 never really took off?

I need to pick up a back up while I can, since Sony took backwards compatibility out of the PS3.

The Ps2 is probably the last "new' system that i have spent countless hours on. Still kinda upset it toppled Sega's Dreamcast.

I cant seem to get into the new systems (I have a xbox 360 and it never get played).

A system with a 12 year span is hard to duplicate.

While I love my 360, nothing will top I'll always love my PS2 as the retro collections really hit their peak in that time. There were classic games released that weren't before and never again (mostly Taito titles like Jungle Hunt & Elevator Action). Also some very cool licensed games like Battlestar Galactica with the voices of Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict.
I still find it ridiculous in this day & age that they took backwards compatibility out of the the PS3 because it was too costly.

We still use our PS2. There wasn't a great desire to upgrade because of the lack of compatability with the PS3. I should buy some back up hardware before it starts becoming "collectible"
              It's all good!

Wow...that's quite a surprise. I've had mine for nearly 12 years. Guess they'll be 'rare' now.

Im glad the system was redesigned. It's much easier getting it to play some of the older titles.

Yeah, I've noticed that it won't play certain games anymore. I meant to get it replaced with a backwards compatible PS3, but then they stopped making them like that.

I think that lack of backward combatibility is the biggest drawback with getting a ps3. I've played ones that friends have and I think I'll just stick with the xbox 360 and ps2.

Anyone know if the lack of support is in the software? If its in the software there may be a way to do hacks that make them compatible. I use to keep up with that sort of thing but its been many years since I even cared. I remember getting my dreamcast to play all kinds of systems years ago. (Nes, atari, etc.).

Alas, it's a chipset that Sony removed from the PS3 hardware: the Emotion Engine CPU and the Graphics Synthesizer GPU.

Trying not to repeat what happened with the psp probably.

I think I prefer the PS2 as well. I loved all the LotR games.

What I really miss is a version of Panzer General.

PS4, please make some table top-like strategy games!

And ones easy to see and look at for long periods.

I thought I remembered reading that the launch models (60GB and 20GB versions) had those chips for backwards compatibility, but the next versions released the following year used software emulation instead (and models after that removed compatibility all together)
