Blu-ray help needed. Player stopped playing most disc

I have a Sony BDP-S350 Blu Ray player that I purchased 3-4 years ago. This player has been used maybe 24 times at the most. A few weeks ago we went to watch our Game of Thrones Blu Ray and it wouldn't play. It just said "Unknown Disc" and wouldn't play. I decided to hook it up to the internet and get the latest firmware. It still wouldn't play the discs for some reason. I put them into my PS3 and they played fine. I figured it had something to do with the disc.

Fast forward to today. My daughters wanted to watch the Serenity blu-ray. I put it in and get the same "Unknown Disc" error. I had just watched this a few months ago and it worked fine. I decided to put in two other discs (Iron Man and Hellraiser) just to see if they would work and they wouldn't. I tried one final disc, Tangled and it worked. I once again hooked it up to the internet via ethernet cable to see if there was another update I could get and there was nothing.

Does anyone have any idea of what might be going on? I thought about contacting Sony but based on some searches, their answer to others was to send it in and for $112.00 they will fix it. I am not going to do that, I would just buy a new, non Sony one instead. I feel like taking this one out back and introducing it to my Louisville Slugger.

I have no idea about blu ray, but I have had troubles with Song DVD players in the past (a few) ... They also have the worst customer service of all companies ever... Their customer service was in India and the operators only speak broken English and they all have bad attitudes.

Disassembled the player, remove the BD drive, clean both lasers with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip, and re-assembled the player. This is unfortunately a common problem with some Sony Blu Ray players.

See if there is a way to reset the player. I had an issue with mine (toshiba) and resetting it fixed everything.

I agree, If this doesn't work and your firmware is up to date, you can proceed to the Louisville Slugger.

Thanks for the advice. I just got done doing a reset and no luck on that. My next step will be to try and clean the lens. This is frustrating since it really didn't have that much wear on it. I think I will avoid Sony products from here on out. It seems like they have gone down hill.

Hmmmm....

Does it not play disks it used to? If it won't play new disks, sometimes there's weird copy protection bits that confuse the machine.

That's what I am beginning to wonder. Maybe the last firmware update added on some kind of DRM. I hooked it up to the internet thinking that maybe it would work but still no luck.

It plays some of the discs is used to but not all of them. Just for the heck of it yesterday, after this post and reset, I put in Iron Man again, and it wouldn't play. I then put in the Disney film Dinosaur and it played.

My final step today will be to take it apart and clean the lens to see if it does the trick.

That might. Dust the guts too, in case theres some grunge clogging up the mechanisms. It seems too new to be wearing down. My DVD player does weird stuff, but I think that's 'cos it's 12 years old, and has seen a LOT of use.

Actually not using it is worse than using it. Dust builds up inside them when they sit and they don't read correctly. Haven't tried cleaning my Sony but when I do older playstation 2 game consoles I use the long wood handled swabs like doctors use. I can reach in there and clean the laser without disassembling the unit. My Wii got the same way when my kids went off to college. They came home and it didn't work. A simple cleaning solved it.
