Using umbrellas as clothing parts

Ive noticed that some of the fabric is sort of like the material on umbrellas (like Robins shirt).

My question is: how hard is it to sew this material?

By hand it's tricky; with a sewing machine it's really hard to do anything on a small scale unless you use a backing to stabilize it as it runs through the machine foot. It's not all created equal either. Some the weave holds together well; some not.

Hmmmm....

Get some fray check. A lot of umbrellas are made from coarse nylon, and the fabric'll unravel pretty quick.

A side note; if you dismantle the extending ribs of the umbrella carefully they could make very nice and functional wings for Mego figures. I found a small, busted umbrella and noticed this as I played around with the parts. You could sew a cover for it and make rows of fabric feathers, etc. to sew onto it. It should work nicely.
