One small thing I always find interesting about something like this is that no one ever thinks of including a keyboard (or from back then a typewriter, for typing commands).

It would seem to me that back then with technology speculation, particularly in fiction, most would assume that you would speak to this device. Wasn't typing considered woman's work in most office situations back in the day?

Of course necessity has only pushed forward voice recognition software to the point of mass usability in recent years due to the need for hands free Phone usage while driving.

I had just been introduced to the text based Internet using lynx, which let you talk to folks around the world at educational Institutions mostly via email and forums and newsgroups when they introduced the first browser, mosaic with a graphical interface. It strikes me in retrospect, despite the fact that is was slow to the point of non functionality at times, that at this point the future opened up to me. I've been saying this ever since whenever I've been invited to a secondary or institution of higher learning to chat with students... The job you might very likely end up taking, might not exist just yet. whichever traditional area of study you are engaged in now might have an evolutionary leap forward that you need to anticipate, or you get left behind. I've realized it's advice that applies equally to me now as I still run to catch up with the drive for social media and mobility. Luckily, as long as there is this ridiculously huge population of aging boomers even further behind the curve than I am, you still have a customer base for which you can serve as translator/Sherpa for hire because they do not speak the jargon of Gen Y and Z.
