I heart Dark Shadows comix, so i nearly spit out my beverage when I found this on Amazon.

Amazon.com: Dark Shadows: The Best of the Original Gold Key Series (9781613450161): D.J. Arneson, Arnold Drake, Joe Certa: Books

I must have missed a meeting. I ordered it immediately, anybody have it already? Is it any good?

    Neat!

I'm kinda surprised at how many of the old Gold Key books have been clollected. Granted, they're usually the tie-ins; Dark Shadows, Star Trek, Battle of the Planets.... if only they'd collect Mighty Samson.

But at any rate; it's nice to see that GK hasn't been forgotten.

I have a number of the old Gold Key comics...Joe Certa was never my favorite artist. Too bland. Anyone reading the new Dynamite series- not bad so far, glad they left it in the '70s era. I liked the Moonstone crossover with Kolchack too.

Another meeting I have missed, I even bought Darkhorse's "Magnus Robot Fighter" TPB with the sole hope that Samson was next.

Lucky for me, my son thinks "Magnus" is a highbrow reading.

DS comics (and gold key in general) were forever remind me of my "first" comic store called Morgan Self Ltd. It was one half of a used bookstore (which sadly just closed) the walls were lined with "old" comics like Dark Shadows and Lost in Space.

Man, I haven't read Gold Key Dark Shadows comics since I was a kid. Wonder how they hold up?

I like Dynamite's series. It has a Gold Key feel to me so far...

Were any of you Dark Shadows nerds geeked about the mention on last week's Mad Men?

Looks like they did Dr Spektor too!

Dunno 'bout anyone else, but I was real glad Valliant didn't bring back Spektor or Samson in the 90's.

I can't say the same, while I didn't read Magnus or Solar, I thought they looked pretty well done and worked well to raise the profile of the characters.

Turok I didn't like but hell, people knew who Turok was!

                              >I thought they looked pretty well done and worked well to raise the profile of the characters.

Well.... I think this is where I differ from most of hardcore fandom. I see myself as the audience, and as such have no personal investment in any “franchise.” I don’t read out of loyalty, obligation, inertia.... I read ‘cos I like the stuff. To that end I don’t see the need for proliferation of what I like, except to facilitate more reading. A lot of time when something is brought back it’s done with an eye for a modern audience.... which is fine, but almost everything is a product of it’s era, and modernizing invariably changes it’s character; making it into something different.

....which isn’t to say it HAS to happen like that: Magnus was pretty close to the original comic in scope and idea.... but more often than not you get something askance. (Turok, with more than a dash of Jurassic Park.) An X-Filed Spektor would have made me cry, as would a more gritty Samson.
