Thread: How do you catalog your toy collection?

  1. How do you catalog your toy collection?

I'm probably not the first to admit that my collection is beginning to take over my living space. Now that I have a storage space in building I will be putting some of my bad boys away for a bit.

So...it's pretty important to know what I actually have. I've entertained just photographing everything as a group and writing it all down in a notebook. I thought that there might be a better way.

Anyone out there use excel or some other program that includes images to sort their collection that they would like to recommend? Or even share if it happens to be a rocking excel setup??

    Thanks

I keep it pretty simple. I use a word document and everytime I get something new I update it. I also have a printed copy around for easy access. For now I only have my MEGOs cataloged. Eventually I'll get everything listed with descriptions and so forth.

yeah, this I need to do. I have seen some progams for this on ebay for like $8. probably worth it. I have some spreadsheets about some stuff, but not very up to date.

I use a big 'ol Excel workbook, with corresponding pics (which I took myself of my own toys, so I can see if somethings missing, damage, etc) in folder hierarchy. So I can access any part of my collection at any time.
Really helps me to remember what I have so I don't buy it again!

I made an extensive list with photos for the insurance company.

Never really thought abut it. Lots of folks have suggested I have them insured (I have A LOT)...but I collect for fun and have never been one to care too much about such terms as "Mint in Box", so I throw them in tupperware or on a shelf.

I look at it. Anything I can't display, I sell.

Its not a perfect system and I've rebought pieces over the years but the journey is fun.

That's the way I try to do it too. What's the point of spending money on something you are just going to pack away in a box somewhere. I understand that some folks just don't have the room for displaying a lot of stuff, so maybe they have to out of necessity. But I'm lucky enough to have a decent sized room that I can devote to my collection, so if for some reason I have something just sitting in a box, I might as well sell it.

Saying that, I probably should make a proper documentation of everything I got, for insurance purposes.
