The "Official" Mid Century/Mod Furniture Threadd

I know Megoat had a cool thread a long while back, and spacecaps new retro mirror thread reminded me I had been meaning to start a new thread and post some pics of some retro furniture and stuff I've picked up. So I know I'm not the only one that goes nuts for this stuff, let's see your retro 50's/60's/70's furniture too!

Ok, starting in the upstairs dining room we've got 6 original 60's Panton chairs and a long ovular table (year/make unknown)


My wife picked up this old desk thing, I thought she was crazy and wondered what she was going to do with it, turns out it stores dishes pretty good. Can't remember the name of these types of chairs but I believe they are reproductions. I also don't know why there's a Casper the ghost's uncle sitting on one of them.

A whole lot of retro grooviness all together in one spot. I'm constantly changing up the displays in the square display cabinets. One day I'll settle on something.



Vintage 50's oxblood sectional. I did have painting on the green wall, but took them down when I decided to go get a big bronze wall sculpture (you know the type) from a local antique barn, so just before I got there, havent put paintings back up.



Mostly retro inspired art by Tim Biskup (very influenced by artist Jim Flora), but a few 50's 60's Jazz lp's scattered about as well (a Jim Flora LP as well as a Andy Warhol 7").

This chair is a bit of a knock off of Arne Jacobson's egg chair (not a great pic of it). Needs re-apolstering as my cats have destroyed it, as you can see.

Super nice. My wife and I live in a Mid-Century home, but don't have nearly the kind of set-up you have. It is our favorite era/style.

Love your Biskup collection. He lived in Fresno (my hometown) for many years when his family moved here. I saw him play in half a dozen bands and DJ all the time back in the day. He had his first art show here, after he'd already moved back down to LA, and I remember even then thinking this dude was going to make it.

Great stuff. I love mid-century style, but original pieces are super-expensive now, so I end up using reproductions.



My living room has a repro Noguchi coffee table (man, that glass was HEAVY), a repro Eileen Gray side table (on the far left with the Superman nostalgia radio on it), an old space age style floor lamp, and some Eames pillows (the black ones with the small dot pattern).



The kitchen's been stuck in a half-remodel for about a decade now, so I decided to just get the furniture in. These are all modern, but have that retro space age flair I like. On the table is a vintage menu, an old Art Frahm pinup in a frame, and a retro address book set.

I'd take a picture of my Fiestaware collection, but it's kind of embarrassingly crammed into the cupboard, sitting on the counters, and all over the place. I have a giant red IKEA display case it will all go in eventually.



There's a neat warehouse full of vintage furniture here in York... I don't know where the guy comes up with the stuff, but anyone that likes mid-century would go nuts to see it. Unfortunately, his prices are pretty high for me, because he spends a lot of time fixing and refinishing everything, but I got lucky and spotted this chair with a chrome base sitting in a pile on a dusty shelf and he sold it to me cheap since it was the leftover in his set (he refinished four and had this one left). My brother who is pretty much an interior design genius reupholstered it in a black crocodile vinyl I found online.

Last but not least:



My red/orange JVC Videosphere with the rare alarm clock base. It doesn't work, unfortunately, but I got it dirt cheap at a country auction out in the boonies.

I have a few other knickknacks here and there, like a kidney-shaped two-level end table with iron legs, an old chrome kitchen table and chairs (in sorry shape), one of those sunburst clocks, and a lot of retro stuff that's less mid-century modern than just mid-century, like these things:

Sadly, the only furnishings I picked out in this house are in my room. When my mom and I moved in this house in 2006, she and my older brother (who owns this house) picked out the furniture. I vow that one day I will have my 70s house! But I'm more the overstuffed, bulky, console TV type person. Lots of browns, and rusts, and orange. I'm not crazy about sleek lines and white furniture. But your style is very interesting.

That's really cool, I'm a really big fan. I have some other of his stuff as well as some really cool SHAG prints that he did for Disney World. Would really like to add some more Jim Flora stuff as well.

Ha! I'll ask my wife, she's the one who turned me on to all this stuff. I can't remember what it is, but I know I have something that was right off the set of Space 1999, not an actual prop, but the exact same thing. I'll try to find it.

I need to add some white rocks around the plant. It was originally white and I spray painted it silver.
