    Sci-Fi Mirror

Aside from collecting vintage toys, I love Mid Century Mod decor. My place looks like something out of the Brady Bunch and one day I should photograph some of it and put up the pics up for those that like the retro style too. The other day I found a perfect blend of Space Age art mixed with actual science fiction and I'm very excited to have won the auction as usually you don't find the two so blatantly together. If you can get past the bald dude taking the picture reflected in the mirror (at least he's clothed), this really is a cool piece.

In case you didn't know, Turner was the leading manufacturer in mass produced home art and made a ton of wall art all throughout the 50's to 1975. Even though their "art" was mass produced and sold in almost every department store throughout the country, some of their stuff, especially their mirrored paintings, can sometimes sell for hundreds of dollars today. I won this one for $20 ($30 for shipping) so I think it's a pretty good win. What's really interesting about this piece is Turner went out in 1975 and this predates Star Wars by 2 years even though it looks like it was taken right from the film. Reminds me of the pinball machine backglass and now I need to find a spot for it somewhere.

I love the old stuff too. We have the Wrong House at the moment, but plans include a 1950s kitchen and a 1970s "Space Age" TV/home cinema room.

In the last few months I bought this setting for $200...

... and this chair for $57...

... which I've tried to make as retro as I can. This was going to be my study chair, but the kids have claimed it.

My last win was a similar swivel/rocking chair that I won for 87¢ !!! That one's going to be redone in bottle green corduroy.

One thing I love about old furniture is that it's human-sized, unlike furniture made for the up-sized humans of today. Armchairs like these fit in the back of my VW Golf.

I presume you know of Retro Renovation .

Yeah thats the stuff I'm talking about. I love all that Danish style teak wood and the chrome kitchen set for $200 is a steal. There's an antiques store not to far from me that has a similar set in blue and they're asking a grand for. Love the retrorenovation site...they have those shag rugs showcased in the link but man all those RYA rugs are never cheap. I should also mention one of my hobbies would be to find this old stuff at garage sales and flea markets and restore it. It's become increasingly difficult to do that though since a lot of this stuff is getting harder to find at the right price.

I have another 1950s dinette setting out back - a red one. Amazing how much rust scrubs right off with fine steel wool - gets the chrome looking almost as good as new. The one above was "rusty" when I bought it. Three hours after picking it up... shiny shiny.
