    Mattel Slime for '78

    \

Mattel toys managed in the late 70s to package some random chemicals and make into a pop culture sensation that never quite went away. Slime may have been the "big ripoff" my parents said is was (for the record my Shag carpet loving parents forbade me to own it) but every kid was drawn to the stuff and HAD TO OWN IT.

By 1978, Mattel was coming up with newer, grosser ways of marketing slime.

I can't recall if I had the actual Mattel slime in the 70s or not. I know I had the variety that came in gumball machines. My parents had hardwood floors and area rugs, but I still managed to ruin a rug in my mother's verbotten living room. Whoops.

I did have slime when Mattel revived it to go with MOTU's Horde Slime Pit!

Oh, slime...I remember having to scrape dried slime off the shelves at Penney's where I worked in the toy dept. All crusty- yuk! Plus it ate the paint off the metal.

I never had the actual Slime trademark product, but a knockoff from gum machines.

And just yesterday, I was watching the Silme Monster commercial:

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhEwHLwWaM8
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

Oh yeah, I had all those in the catalogue, Slime, Slime Worms and the Slime Monster game. If I recall, Slime worms was kind of weird, the texture wasn't the same as regular slime, I don't know if it was a reaction with the rubber worms or something. I never actually played the Slime Monster game, but I had a lot of fun playing with that big plastic monster, filling him up with slime and having him attack my Star Wars guys.

MAN, I LOVED Slime!!! Strange thing is... this stuff sells for BIG bucks on ebay when someone has an unopened can for sale (can't imagine what the stuff looks like inside after 30+ years). Mattel is just plain looney for not rereleasing this stuff for nostalgic old guys like myself. It can't be that hard or expensive to make and they would make a killing. Of course, poor decisions are just par for the course at Mattel, these days.

There's a company in England (Character Options, Ltd.) that is making Scooby Doo toys that has been making their version of Slime called Scooby Doo Goo Figure Pod. The stuff feels, looks, and smells just like vintage slime and there's a small plastic figure immersed inside the can. Toys R Us sells the stuff. The same company has also taken up Hasbro's neglect to produce repros of Stretch Armstrong (another toy that sells for BIG bucks on ebay that would sell like hotcakes if reproduced) by producing a Stretch Scooby. Great toy.

Actually, it's relatively simple to find Slime subsitutes for under $5 on the interweb. What somebody enterprising needs to do is reproduce the original can and viola, a little business is born.

That would be great! I've been looking for an empty can to keep the Scooby Slime in for greatest nostalgic effect. I just checked ebay and an EMPTY plastic Slime can recently sold for about $67! Ouch. I've also recently seen unopened cans go for between $300 and $400, each.

Yeah I probably made and gave out close to 500 of them.

I'm not sure how to answer this.
