For a pricing overview (what you can actually expect to pay) check out "the going rate" sticky thread in Auction Watch. Just because a seller lists something as "rare" doesnt make it so.

I think the best rule of thumb would be, collect what you like, and what makes you happy.

Another great rule of collecting, at least IMHO, collect what you can afford. We've seen a few members throught the years buy, buy, buy, only to turn around and sell, sell, sell.
maybe set aside 10% or so of total income for your collection.

welcome to the boards, stick around, have fun.

The Going Rate subsection down in Auction Watch is a new community project introduced this past year. hopefully it will help many newcomers figure out pricing.

As has been mentioned, repro parts can make things a bit tricky, but luckily there is the Terrific Accessories Check to help you out.

Other than that, collect what makes you happy. Whether it's the nostalgic buzz or just love of the characters. There are so many different kinds of characters, both vintage and new in this format that there is guarantee to be something for everyone, whether their passions are superhero, SCIFI, horror, western, animation, celebrity, classic television etc. If it doesn't exist, there are plenty of customizers willing to help bring your dream figure into being.

Welcome to The Museum. This place is a great source of information. Like alot of other collectors have mentioned. Patience is the key, don't be in a hurry to amass a collection. The journey getting their is where the fun is at. Happy collecting.
