I'd say less a crush on the characters themselves and more love of the money these particular characters are bringing into their pockets.

And I don't believe it's westerners they are primarily concerned with as customers since only limited amounts of the runs are released here via sideshow. I've seen the pictures of the lineups to their showrooms in Hong Kong and Tokyo during a major release. Think of the great cabbage patch kids Christmas shortage of the eighties. their bread and butter is Pacific Rim.

Are guys in Hong Kong that interested in Jack Sparrow, though? Or Wolverine? I honestly don't know. I'd always assumed HT had been doing Asian-oriented stuff all along, and this Western stuff was sort of a side thing to expand their market. Of course, that's me working totally on preconceived notions that I pulled completely out of my behind with no info to base it on.

going by my wife's toy shopping experiences in the land of never-ending robots and sentai, I'm really not surprised that he's so popular given that Hot Toys is aimed primarily at the Asian collectors market. I had to try and find a very nice way of telling her to stop bringing back a new Iron Man revoltech figure every single month for me from Japan, not that I wasn't hugely grateful and appreciative, but 5 are enough.
Feel free to tell her to bring back some for me...
