    The Mego Fonzie Prototype

Thanks to super collector Mark Huckabone we have another glimpse into the inner workings of the Mego toy corporation. This rare early vinyl test head reveals an early rejected head sculpt for Arthur Fonzerelli AKA “The Fonz” from the Mego Happy Days line. Found at the home of a former Mego employee, this early head sculpt captures Henry Winkler’s features well but in the end Mego chose a friendlier, slightly more stylized approach. Be sure to check out the photo gallery below and for more 50s fun be sure to check out the Mego Museum Happy Days Gallery.

Very cool. It may be the novelty, but I think I actually prefer the prototype head.

Thats awesome and funny this came up because last night I found an extra Fonzie head and gave him a regular mego body with thumb hands and gave him CTVT Fonz clothing with a mego jacket. This prototype Fonz is awesome!!! Is there anyway of getting a casting of it for a custom?

I'm relating to the more Semitic look of the prototype!

Great find! But to me his chin is too big and his hair is off. Looks more like Ron Perleman than Henry Winkler. I think Mego made the right call.

I can't decide - can someone paint it for me?

Wow a rare find! Its great that someone saved it, and even better that it made its way here!

I also like the proto type better - maybe it is because I don't have it
or because I now want it!

Really quick rough Photoshop job. Gives you an idea though. Still like the produced one better, mostly for the hair and chin.

That's the vibe I got too, the sculptor did a good job of capturing Winkler's mouth but his face is much leaner in real life.
