    That's what I guessed. This has become a common way for a seller to get noticed on eBay. Post a ridiculous auction and next thing you know tons of people are looking at your stuff.

    Yeah, this is becoming a lot more commonplace now since they changed their price structure. Since you get up to 50 free auction-style listings free each month, and buy it nows are something like 50 cents regardless of starting price, it makes sense to start with crazy high prices.

    It brings publicity and gets people talking, and usually ends with someone contacting the seller and completing the sale off-site.

    I imagine once it becomes more widespread, they'll change the fee structure again to shut it down, or just raise insertion fees yet again.
