can someone identify this pota toy

I've seen it described as in this auction as a hand puppet. It has 4 holes in the back big enough to stick the tip of your fingers in. but the face doesn't do much and the whole thing is kinda awkward as a puppet. Does anyone know if it was actually sold as a puppet or something else. They always seem to come from the UK.

Wow, I'm stunned. I think you're losing your touch Mike. I thought you knew everything about POTA. Wish I could help you out...but I have no idea what that thing is.

I know nothing about that particular ape one. But I do recall these types of puppets when I was younger, with the four holes in the back. The ones I remember were generic weird faces but at least had open mouths that you could actually use them as opposed to this ape one. I do think its likely a puppet based on the holes in the back, just a poorly executed one.

The ones I recall were similar to these:

A little more digging around and this might be closer to your answer. A similar Batman puppet in the package. Looks equally bad for actually making any expressions. And the package says made in England.
