    Superheroes or Monsters?

Technical issues still prevent Forgotten TV from happening today (It will return next Sunday) so I thought I'd show a page from something I'm working on, the 1980 Ben Cooper halloween costume catalog. While Hulk and Red Skull work as masks, the Batman and Spider-Man are somewhat creepy thanks to the materials used. How old is Batman supposed to be, it looks like an octogenarian under that cowl!
More of this in the very near future.

Oh, do I remember these. Every time I saw them in stores over the years, I thought the entire production run had been ruined by something, perhaps even partially melted.

Does this catalog show the monster masks? I know they did a Creature from the Black Lagoon as well as Dracula...

I owned the Batman. I actually remember walking down the shopping center walk from the Hallmark store my mom managed, and going into the Begley's Drugstore and finding the Batman mask in their Halloween section. Despite the stupid bat on the forehead that Cooper just wouldn't let go of, I bought it. I remember thinking the Spidey mask looked far too sloppy. I don't remember my Batman mask looking this hideous.

The Red Skull seems like an odd choice. Perfect for a fright mask, but pretty obscure to the general public. A great gift for any evil bellhop though!!!

Yeah...what WAS the deal with the bat-symbol on the forehead? Were they worried that Batman would be unrecognizable without it?

              Creepy!

Batman looks like the Joker (from the up coming movie.....) wearing Batman's mask.

Yeah it has a ton of monster content, it's a huge catalog, probably the biggest thing I've tried to do at once. I had that Ben Cooper Creature mask as a kid, bought it at Kresges.

That I would like to see. Seems they made the Creature mask in at least two different colors, one green and then a later grey or tan (or perhaps both).

Kresges, huh? Never set foot in one. I grew up in Atlanta, the American South, and while it had tons of different stores, K-Mart was all I ever saw of Kresge. That's pretty darn cool. Thanks as always for posting these treasures.
