This early ad for Big Jim immediately whisks me back to the my earliest memories of "Action Figures". I took a few breaks but the damn things have been a part of my life since then, probably better off because of it...
I have that set, w/ all the pieces except the boat. But I have a small plastic GIJoe raft that works just as well.

'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."
My older brothers had a DR Steel when I was little. We always talked about "someday" finding a Big Jim and when I was 11 I found one at a flea market in his carrying case. I can still remember how excited I was.
I always have and always will love Big Jim. Such a cool toy line. With the exception of Big Jack, I have most of them boxed now. Loved the traditional series and thought the PACK was cool as well. I have the camper and the Beast. But I always loved the outfits. Still have two of my Jims dressed in the football and catcher's baseball uniforms. Great memories. I still think the body and arms are the coolest invention in action figure history. The way you can make them flex an arm muscle remains fascinating to this day. I still don't know how they did it.
When Big Jim "went west," were there new figures produced, or was it just a matter of a playset/outfits? I've seen reference to Big Jim as a Buffalo Bill figure--was this another figure in the line? Anyone have pictures?

Wanted: Legends of the West (Empire & Excel) and other western historically-based figures. Send me an offer.
Also interested in figures based on literary characters.
We've come a long from "movable" being the big selling point.
I never got into Big Jim, but I always coveted his vehicles and playsets. Even their larger scale couldn't stop from wanting to use them for my 8" guys.
I saw that camper, plus two other Big Jim vehicles (one was a red camper and I can't remember the other one was) at a toy show this past weekend. they were asking $30 for all three. I really wanted them, but I've got no place to put them.
Next to my megos this was my Fav Having that camper and the Wolf P.A.C.K and a few others.....Great line and Great figures wish they were rereleased....
What always struck me was how incredibly successful this line was overseas. And how much longer it lasted after Big Jim had taken his last breath in the states. That was a revelation I came across in the 90's. I always assumed Big Jim was a very traditional American product. Never knowing anything about the differences or continuing line overseas. From that perspective, it's interesting this line has not been revived for those markets alone. Big Jim had a very long and eclectic life span.
