Why Do You Go To The Movies...?

A comment in the "Rise of the Apes" a financial success???" thread inspired this question:

Why do you go to the movies...mindless escape or intellectual stimulation?

My working days are chock full of problem solving, data analysis and communicating/interacting with Senior Management & Department Directors (approximately 60 departments). I spend about 10-12 hours per week of my personal time keeping up with and seeking out the truth in current events by reading various news sources & watching a variety of opinion shows (this makes for great conversation and debates with my family & friends). I have the responsibilities that come with relating to a significant other, caring for four pets, and maintaining a home. Somehow, in all of this, I'm also able to enjoy my toy collecting hobby, and attend about 2-3 movies a month (comedy, drama, action, sci-fi, horror, chick-flicks...you name it, I'm there).

My favorite movies are usually the ones that take me out of reality and allow me to experience situations that would never occur in real life (think LOTR).

My least favorite movies are films that feel the need to preach to me about how I should, or should not think, feel, react or behave (I'm pretty good at figuring that out for myself).

    So...color me (mostly) mindless entertainment.

    What say you?

    It depends on the movie.

Sometimes I go to escape. Sometimes to learn. Sometimes to appreciate art and sometimes to laugh-- Always to be entertained.

You know, Damien...I do the popcorn thingie Mexican style...I add a stack of dill jalapeño peppers to the top of the bag of popcorn...it's awesome like that.

I don't know if your side of the world has jalapeños in movie theaters...but here in California they do...they are next to the butter oil, ketchup, and mustard pumps...

I hate being preached to and the more hamfisted it gets the more it iritates me. I know the world has problems. But I don't need to be reminded of that 24-7. I don't need or want more stress. I watch movies to relax, unwind and get away from all that crap for a while.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I don't go to the movies because they're too expensive --- and the seats are too small and close together

When I watch a movie I wanna be comfortable

I stopped going to theaters ages ago. The people there were always are loud and rude and the theaters were dirty. I just wait until the movies I want to see hit home video.

I'm with you Mikey. You're cordially invited to movie night once we get the new house set up.
