Even if the production budget is $100,000,000 and the prints/promo double that, they are undoubtably into profit position once they hit DVD/Bluay, ITunes/net flicks/payperview, and cable windows inside this year.

Hopefully the success of this might mean some tie in merch finally. Even if it'sHot Toys figures... Maybe spur some nostalgia brand stuff. We can only hope Diamond takes notice and gives the EMCE repros another shot. ( we never thought the other two Night of the Living Dead figures would be released either!)

I've not seen "THE HELP" (nor do I plan to), but I hate it nonetheless for keeping ROTPOTA from being all that it could be....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

I know but a three week old film came up on top of two new genre entries, that's all I was saying. #2 in week three is amazing.

Especially since it also beat out Spy Kids 4 as well. I've been looking after my niece and nephew all week and they have been severely bombarded by the promo machine and reruns of the previous entries on television.

I just hope it can muster enough business to beat the Burton remake. It still has a ways to go to get there.

The Help seems like a chick flick...my sister and her friends saw it...and they all said it was the best movie of the year...lol.

Now back to Rise of the Apes.

Can we all finally agree...that Rise of the Apes is finally a bona fide hit?

                        With a $93 million budget...and a $305,756,000 worldwide box office take so far...it's safe to say it's a bloody hit...lol...

Yeah, I was dragged more or less kicking and screaming to it on Sunday night and ended up really digging it as well.

I'd say it's more Oscar Bait than Chick Flick, despite the marketing.

As for Apes... I think most folks really underestimate the power of the International Box Office these days. Particularly as the time between the windows of release around the world at the theatre and DVD/Bluray/itunes/netfilx closes down to circumvent bootlegging.

Action/Genre movies generally port well internationally and many misses at the domestic US box office with enough guns and car chases do will overseas.

Keeping in mind I come from a country who put the last nail in their own domestically produced english film industry ten years ago by selling out their theatrical distribution system. Now with block booking of the Hollywood films, our biggest homegrown "name" movies are lucky to be released on 23 screens across the country. Canadian filmmaking has been reduced to a government funded heritage project destined for the archives... with the occasional cult genre breakout like Cube or Ginger Snaps. (homegrown Quebec/Franco Canadian filmmaking has survived fortunately).

I know there was some comparison earlier with what was perceived as X-men first class' underperformance at the domestic box office with a production budget of $160 million. Check out the final tally with foreign surpassing domestic...

                              Total Lifetime Grosses
                              Domestic: *$146,157,476 ***41.5%
                              +*Foreign: *$206,208,385 ***58.5%
                              =*Worldwide: *$352,365,861 *

X-Men: First Class (2011) - Box Office Mojo

And again, we add DVD/bluray/iTunes/etc. to this. And I'm assuming just like the rest of the X -men films, this one is going to be played on cable forever.
