What to do when you hit the wall...

    Hello all...

Over the past 20 years, I have collected mego's with "force" on 3 different occasions...the first time was in the mid 90's (loose and boxed, but I had most all the carded too)... sold because we moved our operation from Miami to Lynn Haven, FL and needed the operating capital

My second foray into collecting WGSH was in 2002-2004...once again, completed my loose set, and most all boxed... in 2004 we were building our new house ,and viola, had to sell to help fund...

in 2007 I once again, jumped into the collecting game... I mean, I LOVE megos, what can I say...

This time, I was a little more ambitious...I was not only going to complete a loose collection, but a boxed and carded and kresge and CAH as well

Well, almost 5 years later, I am litterally inches away from the finish line...

Have been in contact with 2 gents that had the last 2 pieces I needed to finish...a carded green goblin, and a SB RM robin... actually tentatively had one of the 2 procured, and the second the owner was back and forth on...

As of today, I don't believe either piece will be joining my collection, so I am trying to decide that given how close I am, but how unlikely it is I will complete, if I am going to cull my collection down to just one loose, one carded and one boxed example of each figure (WGSH), or keep all as is and "hope" (been hoping for years) that one day I can procure.

Not sure if I will regret it or not (I mean, do I really need 6 different carded batmans? ,etc)...

just curious how many of you all have hit that wall and what you did when you found out you just don't seem to be able to break through it?

    just curious

I have been on that wall so long I'm sticking to it like Spider-Man.

Used to be that I loved digging up my old wantlists and checking off all the stuff I've obtained.

Last month, I found a file from 2008 titled "want list" and pulled it up. Not one thing. In three years. I got really down about collecting earlier in the year when some of that stuff slipped through my fingers but that was the wrong mindset to have.

It's tough and it makes you do crazy things, I find I slide into other sideline collections really easily but in the end, it'll be fun to finally get the piece. Enjoying the hunt.

I'm not as ambitious as most here, and probably more impulsive and eclectic when it comes to my purchases... I'm just working on a collection of loose WGSH. I'm pretty much down to just Aqualad and I'm suspecting I'm not so aggressive with that one given that the fun is in the hunt.

The rest of the Megos I'm pretty casual with. It's nice to have Trek's and Apes if I stumble across them at good prices, but I don't need to have them.

I'm probably more a collector of favourite characters than specific styles of toys or manufacturer.

I'd probably move onto working on my loose Super Powers more actively which is the next closest thing to completion I have. or maybe original Star Wars figures of which it's just certain Power of the Force pieces (although Star Wars hasn't really had much allure in about a dozen years).

If you enjoy what you do have, not having a few missing items won't seem so bad.
From what you're saying, you have a collection that is pure gold, so focus on that.
Cause once you've "collected them all", what's next?
Just look at your great collection, and enjoy the hunt a little longer...

the "hunt" is for me, every bit as enjoyable as the actual acquistion of the figure (or comic, etc)...

I guess my problem is that I don't have unlimited funds, so I can't collect everything, but I truly wanted to "finish" the wgsh mego line (as I have defined "finishing")...

certainly not considering "walking away" or abandoning the search, just that the little does of realism stinks lol

I've given up on the idea of collecting them all, but all I can say to you is that I appreciate the collection that I do have and enjoy looking at them every now again, sure I have a boxed Zorro on ebay, but I can tell you that that is a extra one that I have. Also my collecting agenda has changed and I just pick up what I fancy and can afford at the time. If it doesn't come my way then, no worries. I've branched out of just comic book Super Heroes and actually own some Westerns and a ever growing collection of AJs which i never thought in a million years that I would collect, but you know, I bought one and then .. well you know how it goes.

Rick you have assembled the most incredible world class collection of WGSH Megos that I ever seen, if you do decide to thin the heard, do yourself and us a favor first and document the collection well before hand. Make a film, make a book whatever. Hell, if it was a book of your collection, i would definitely buy one for sure.

It's one of the reasons I never pay top dollar for anything I buy. Just don't want to buy it and be done. I like the hunt for the deal or the hidden auction or the piece in the bottom of a box or sitting on a table at some obscure yard sale or flea market. Since I only collect loose figures I could have been done in a couple of months if I wanted to. But I'm sure after a while I would look to collecting something else and lose interest. It's just human nature. Once the hunt is done the fun only lasts so long. Kinda like Ahab killing Moby Dick. What to do now? Find another big vicious creature to hunt. I do several smaller toy lines. Thundercats, Inhumanoids, Centurions, Super Powers, and I just started on Bravestarr and Blackstar. If they end the JLU line I'll probably dabble in that. They're readily available at yard sales and relatively inexpensive so I'll pack em away in case I get the itch for another line to collect. Gives me something else to search for but has limits on how far they can go without being too expensive. Hope I never finish my Mego collections. Though there always seems to be something new each year to look for.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

One of my "wants" is to have a WGSH boxed collection. Just one for each character as I don't need every varaition. Since I lost my job that's been put on hold but I do plan to get back to it someday. I'm only 5 away (unfortunately 5 pricey ones but still).

I would say keep looking. Word is getting around you're looking and with the economy you never know you'll want to sell and when.

Add a small line to your collection -- say carded Bend-n-Flex or Pocket Heroes -- to keep you active while hunting for the last grail pieces.
