    Sure there is alway theories.

My theory is that the guy got it maybe as a gift when he was a kid and he was a true Spider Man fan. Therefore, either he or his parents kept it for him all these years in the like new store bought condition that it was originally found in.

Fast forward.....Now many years later.....They guy has gotten older.....Maybe still likes Spider Man, but not as much as he did when he was a kid. The guy is probably married, has kids and lots of bills to pay due to job loss in a very unstable economy.

Bottom line is the guy is selling it because he did his home work and knows that he can get a little change out of the piece.

On the other hand.....The guy bidding on it.....Is either a Mego purist or perhaps a noob to Mego collecting and wants his pieces to be all original boxed T1 first editions. Therefore, He will throw down a higher bid than the average Mego collector that just wants any kind of a Spider Man in good decent condition without a package.

Anyway...That is my theory and I am sticking to it.

Its been awhile since I collected wgsh window box mibs, but the 1st issue Spidey box was always a tough find in top shape. Blemishes, scuff marks, always seemed to show really easy and the box color is very susceptible to sun fading. This looks like it might be in great shape, so $340 sounds pretty good.

Well, the listing says that he has had it in his possession for 20 years. Meaning he got it in 1991. And the auction says and shows that there is a hand-written date on the top that reads: 5-2-74. Hmm… Seems like 1991 to 1974 is a decent amount of time for a previous owner to have it and then decide to part with it. Pre-Internet days as well.

Which is all to say, that while I mainly collect Microman/Micronauts this specific auction is pushing all of my inner 6-7 year-olds buttons.

I threw the question to see which way things would go. Didn't want to lead the witness. :-)

But initially, I did think it was a high premium and I was scouring the pictures wondering if there was an odd variant somewhere that caused the price spike.

Maybe it's just nice and not that common in that condition?
Not sure, really, but it wasn't getting to that price because of low feedback bidders. . . .so, I got curious.

FWIW to my non-8 inch expert eyes the box seems to clean to be vintage; seemed like a repro. But if you check the other pictures, it’s clearly real vintage cardboard.

The market value of Mego Spideys in general have been increasing quite a bit lately. I posted a thread about this a month ago. It would make sense that a pure mint in box sample would fetch this kind of money. For the box to be that pristine is very unique. Great pickup for whoever gets him.
It's not how hard you hit, but how hard you can be hit and still move forward.

Very true. Even common packages like the '79 French Spidey card appear to be fetching close to $200 - $250 a pop for a nice example, when not too long ago they were a $50 -$100 piece.

This is the second time this example has been listed. It was originally posted with a (IMO) very fair BIN price, but the seller ended early and relisted. Either way, a gorgeous example.

Bryan, I was thinking the same thing. It certainly seems like minty boxed WGSH Megos are selling for a premium lately. Seems like they are selling better than even carded figures.
