    1978 Mattel Codename: Galactica Catalog

Several months before it's TV Debut Mattel Toys debuted their merchandise based on the upcoming series titled "Code Name: Galactica" which we all would come to know as "Battlestar Galactica".

20th Century Fox would promptly ligitate the makers of Galactica for copyright infringement but the one thing that Galactica had over Star Wars was the availability of toys by the time the public caught their first glimpse of a cylon.

I was pretty 'anti-Galactica' when it first came out, then fell in love with the show when it added the secondary characters and it grew it's own legs, instead of being a 'Star Wars of the Week' show.

I had the 3" figures, which worked alright as other figures with my limited SW figs. It's a shame they couldn't have made some scaled ships for them, but using the models worked for visuals..

Using the 12" Captain Lazer figs were a cheap, but LAME idea, 'course now I'm sort of looking for that Cylon..

Interesting how the ship designs clearly were finalized before the design of the characters/costumes. This early catalog doesn't even mention the 3.75" figure line. As I understand it, this reflects the status of the tv series production; fx model shots were being done before the show was even finished casting and sets/costumes/etc. were still being designed.

The ships are definitely my favorite.

I'm I correct in observing that the large Cylon figure uses the sculpt of the rack-toy Bubble Blowing Cylon head?

The ships were always my favorites as well. I never liked the figures. I just sold a bunch of the ships i had. I did keep one Viper though.

To this day I am still fascinated by this toy line. I remember summer of 78 being in the Montgomery Wards (must have been late July or August) and they had their entire toy section decorated in a Battlestar Galactica display. How I would love to have some of those cardboard display pieces. Had no idea then that this was a TV show, but I remember thinking "this is going to be big".
                    It's all good!
