Cmonster unleashed his version of Steve Austin
The Six Million Dollar Man - Mego Talk
and it rocks!
When he asked me to do a box for him. He wanted it somewhat evocative of the Kenner look but still in a different direction.
So, that made me remember back when the toys for SMDM first came out. The commercials and the ad copy (in comic books) I saw had the SMDM figure with this round emblem that I never saw on my figure or the figures in the store.
Back then, I figured that this round emblem version was something like that removable mask Batman someone brought to school one day to show that his was different than our molded mask Batmans (making it something rare and cool).
Whenever I was in toy sections, I'd try to see if one of those round emblem SMDM's were still lying around, un-bought. I wanted one of those round emblem SMDM's.
I had no idea that the emblem was a hand drawn addition to a prototype for early package photo and commercial work so it was a given I would never see or find one.
So, my first idea for Cmonster's box was to make a finished version of that round emblem, finally, and work it in to the box.
Add in blue neon circuitry, readout pulse grids, a reworking of the Kenner running art (changing the face, showing bionic cutaways, etc) and finally a cheeky reminder ad to remember to catch Six Million Dollar Man on ABC each week and you have a well rounded package that might've been from 1974.
