I also remember the toys coming out before the cartoon, maybe half a year if my memory serves me. The toys where also labeled AD&D as opposed to the cartoon D&D. AD&D toys had a whole different storyline onto itself. I had several of the kids Golden books as well as activity books based of the AD&D toyline.
Warduke and the other LJN toys were also used in this D&D module:

Both the AD&D toys and D&D cartoon could have easily been shoehorned into one another but weren't and probably the biggest reason the toys didn't last past 2 years. Still they did sell well enough to make a second series. http://www.toyarchive.com/DungeonsDragons.htmlJanson's Good Guy List:

The toys did come out before the cartoon series and some of the action figure characters from the toy line did appear in the cartoon (Strongheart, Warduke and Kelek were some).
