    Casting advice

So I am looking to start casting I have made a handful of sculpts and a few people are interested in me making some copies. I have never done anything with casting before, I have watched a few videos and looks at the custom section here but mostly I need to know where to get the casting material (everything from the mold to the resin that will be the new casting) and how much money am I looking to spend on the initial investment. here are the pieces I am looking to cast:

Get a smooth on Smoothcast 300 and Vytaflex 20 trial kit, you can get several moulds and castings from them.

I don't know what the cost in dollars are but they cost me about £55 for one of each ( minus shipping ).

Casting is pretty easy and is not rocket science so you should be up and casting in no time once you get your materials.

I started out with purchasing stuff from Hobby Lobby. They have enough casting supplies there to get you off to a great start if you happen to have one close by you.

Also be sure to take advantage of their 40% off coupon which can be found at their web site to save you some extra dough.

I later evolved to Smooth on products because personally I think they are better. You can order them direct from the web site as well.

Best of luck to you as you begin your new endeavor.

    Hmmmm....

I use GI-1000 RTV silicone for all my molds. It's pretty durable, and has a long curing time. (30 hours or so.) I prefer that 'cos it lets more air escape from the mold. Smooth-On makes some good stuff too. I also suggest getting some regular 2x4 Lego blocks for making your mold boxes. And plasticiene, for 2 part molds.

I usually spend about $100 per order for supplies, and that keeps me going for 6 months or so.
