The Top 10 Greatest Hulk Brawls of All Time (and so much more)!!!

The 10 Greatest Hulk Brawls of ALL TIME!!!!

The Hulk stands as the quintessential super heavyweight of the comics world!! He is well known for having some of the greatest slugfests ever because let's face it, the brute fights anyone and everyone! With his hair-trigger-temper he never needed a reason besides showing his opposition that he is simply the strongest one there is. So as a result, the Hulk has had brawls that set the standard for which all others are measured by. And this is the "real-deal" Marvel Universe Hulk and not some pale-alternate-world-imitation like the Ultimates Hulk, Red (****) Hulk, Blue (****) or Hulk 2099 (UGHHH!), plus each encounter is in Marvel timeline and continuity (sorry, no What-If comics and the like). Here are greenskin's 10 absolute finest. Each fight is broken down into five categories and rated on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the highest), they are:

    Match up:
How well the combatants stack up against each other. And is the fight "pay-per-view" material.

    Action:
Was only a few punches thrown? Or was it (like we comic-buffs tend to say) "Kirby-esque!"

    Story:
How well the fight worked into the overall story (was there any real sense to the fight or was the Hulk just wanting to SMASH).

    Destruction:
My personal favorite category! Did a few feathers get ruffled or was the earth shaken to the very core!!!

    Classic:
How well does the fight rank up with other famous comic brawls in the comic universe's great history (or just check out your local comic shop and see if "feisty-fanboys" still talk about it)! When it was over would one of the combatants say, "This should be the fight they remember me by."

I put the Hulk incarnation next to each issue and you can click on the link below to see the the differences each incarnation has.

These issues are what comic books are all about; action, struggle, will and heroes up to their necks in ****!! Issue 25 also contained the most awe-inspiring "Hulk vs Thing" brawl ever!!! This was Marvels first really big battle issue with Kirby going wild as the brutes slugged it out all over New York! Plus this fight set the standard for all the other comic brawls to come. Each issue had so much mayhem, tension, and all out destruction that this two-parter is the ENTIRE comic book medium at it's finest!!! Don't believe me, then check them out!!

    And now the greatest ever...

    1. JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY (vol.1) 112 (1965)
    "Gravage" Hulk vs Thor
    Writer: Stan Lee
    Artist: Jack Kirby
    Inker: Chic Stone
    Match up: 10
    Action: 10
    Story: 9
    Destruction: 7
    Classic: 10
This was the ultimate and greatest slugfest between the Hulk and the Thunder God!! At the end, Marvel fanboys still didn't get the answer to who was the stronger. But what they did get was the most incredible one-on-one battle EVER published in a comic!!!! An argument can be made that F.F. 25 and 26 are the greatest but hey, it's my thread and I'm sticking to JIM 112 because both combatants were so evenly matched (you just knew the Hulk was gunna kill the Thing in issue 25)! Thor wanted to prove he was better than this raging mortal in hand to hand combat and asked Odin to take away the power of Mjolnir for 5 minutes so he could duke it out "sinew against sinew!" Thor needed to prove to himself and the world that he was the superior! But even a thunder god can make mistakes as he couldn't stop the raging behemoth and his ever-increasing strength, endurance, and durability! For nothing was going to stop the Hulk from destroying the hammer and to crush the pompous Thor to claim himself champion of the Marvel Universe!! Maybe this is not the first, but it sure is the BEST big-time fight ever (Lee/Kirby can't be beat)!!

    HONORABLE MENTIONS!!!
Okay, those 10 set the standard but the Hulk has plenty of others. These are some more of the Hulk's great brawls over the years (now any issue with a great fight is included even if it wasn't in continuity). These are just simply the best Hulk fights in comics through the years since his first appearance in May of 1962 thru today (but let’s be honest, the Hulk sucks today...so enjoy)

Yeaaah, that's pretty comprehensive all right..

I haven't picked up a nice enough copy of FF 112 yet, I've read it several times in those FF essential books.

MY all-time Fav from the Bronze Age is Marvel Feature 11: BEST combination of sly humor, great action and both the Urgo and the Leader behind the scenes and Jim Starlin art.. Just a cozy, little story, but lots of great, unassuming charm. I'm not a big Hulk fan, but their chemistry was perfect here.

Close runner ups are GS Superstars #1 and those early Bronze Age Defenders punch-ups.
