Thread: Rare Mego Silk Screened Supergirl variant?

  1. #1

Rare Mego early production Silk Screened Supergirl variant?!

    Hello all,

Just thought I'd post this little beauty that I snagged off Ebay last year to see if anyone has any info on her.....the SS Supergirl variant on the right (seen below). I have examined her closely next to my other loose SS Mego Supergirl (seen on the left of the pics below) and there are differences to be sure as listed below.

    1. Variant has higher waist.

    2. Variant has longer 'hot pants'

    3. Variant has fewer belt circles.....4 on the variant (fig. on right) on each side and 5 1/2 - 6 1/2 on the regular issue SS Supergirl (fig. on left) depending on which side you're counting.

    4. Variant's 'S'-shield is slightly different design.

    5. Variant has thinner black lines around costume details.

    6. Variant's eyebrows are just a little higher on her forehead.

    7. Variant's blue eye color is just a hint darker.

I've asked a friend of mine if he's ever seen one of these as he is very knowledgeable about Mego stuff and he said he's never seen one but thought it might be an early production run. The only other place I've ever seen one is in Ben Holcombe's book on page 112 (from the Mego foldout booklet as seen below here on the MM site) - it's a tiny black and white photo but it is the EXACT same SS design as the one I have......and best of all she is MINTY - MINT! I just love her and she is my favorite Mego figure that I currently own.

Any help identifying her would be greatly appreciated. Muchas grassy-*** in advance guys! LOL

Well, without further adieu.....he's my lil' SS variant Supergirl in all her minty glory!

The SS Supergirl design in this booklet (below) appears to be the EXACT design as the one I have in the pics above......definitely an early production piece. I wish they had kept this design as I prefer it over the regular issue SS Supergirl.

How SWEET is that?! Nice score!
It's not how hard you hit, but how hard you can be hit and still move forward.

Thats a Rood Supergirl. Heres a link with the same figure. It looks like they just put a Supergirl outfit on her.

She's not a 'Rood Speel Goed Supergirl'. I just checked her body on her back and it clearly says "Mego Corp" and the year of production 1972 (in Roman numerals) just like the other Supergirl figures I have. The link you sent for the Rood Supergirl says in the description that the figure says "Rood" on the back of the doll. Mine does not it says "Mego Corp". As a portrait artist I can spot minute differences in facial features in a 'NY minute' and this is NOT a Rood Seel Goed Supergirl. I believe the one you are referring to can be found here: MEGO DUTCH EDT SUPERGIRL/DINAHMITE DOLL VGC ROOD on eBay (end time 14-Jan-11 19:43:24 GMT) . This is clearly different from the one I have.....it is obvious even when looking at the head that the facial features are quite different than mine.

Here's a better pic of a Rood Speel Goed Supergirl figure's face next to my variant SS Supergirl. Not to be rude but (word to the wise) please post factual information not misinformation to avoid misleading people about statements made that are untrue.

Case in point: Rood Speel Goed Supergirl vs Mego Supergirl

    1. Note the more "piggish" nose on the Rood Speel head sculpt.

    2. Brown eyebrows on Rood Speel (not black like the Mego Supergirl) - slightly higher, smaller and spaced further apart than Mego's Supergirl too.

    3. Pinkish lips on Rood Speel (not red like the Mego version).

    4. 4 Eyelashes per eye on Rood Speel version as opposed to Mego's 3 eyelashes per eye.

    5. More detailed eyes of the Rood with added black pupil and extra highlight.

    6. Rood's hair is parted on the opposite side from the Mego Supergirl.

Like I said please know what you're talking about before making absolute statements on this site. I am looking for facts about this figure's origin and the reasons that Mego had for altering the costume details for production pieces and so would everyone else. I'm not trying to be disrespectful just don't want misinformation spread.

Rood Speel Goed Supergirl made in Holland.
