I've noticed those on Ebay and I was just curious, in a sarcastic kind of way. What does the AFA charge someone to assess an action figure? Fascinating because if your paying for a service of this kind, they would need to back their assessment with some kind of industry measure outside of their own "personal" opinion...don't they?

AFA didn't "grade" the cards, that was GIA. Which I understand is a joke among card graders. But puzzles and models I just don't get. How do you "grade" a model. I think I'm going to start grading pencils and home appliances. Anyone have a blender they want graded?

That Robin Aurora kit is probably part of a warehouse find of cases of all Robins made in the late 90s. I had a few that I sold off for $75 each. So its no wonder its high grade, it just came out of a case recently.

AFA is owned and operated by ToyFare Mag (i.e. Gareb S. Shamus Enterprises Inc. & Wizard Entertainment - Wizard World etc). They have nothing to do with Lee's Action Figure News who are far more reputable IMHO.

As silly as I think AFA is, the fact is that buyers will pay premium prices for AFA graded material regardless of how stupid it appears to any of us.

I don't know what the fee is to have an item graded but until buyers discontinue paying premiums for graded items, sellers will continue to have items graded no matter how ridiculous.

If there weren't so many dishonest sellers out there trying to pass off reproductions as authentic items or giving honest descriptions to the condition of their items, AFA would not be necessary.

Unfortunately, they are a necessary evil and as I already stated, as long as someone is willing to pay a premium above and beyond the cost of an ugraded piece, grading of items will continue.

How do you "grade" a model.

Simple really. They would check to see if the box was sealed/dead mint. If not check the spruce trees for all parts and instruction sheets. Are the parts still connected to the spruce trees. Is the instruction sheets real or repro. Any of the parts have glue marks or paint on them.

Like I said, simple.

Don't laugh.....
Vintage cereal boxes are big $$$ to those types of collectors. I know a collector who collects vintage cereal boxes that pays hundreds close to a thousand for any mint origonal vintage box.

This same seller flipped out when I told him I had a vintage 70's Boo Berry box NEVER opened until the late 90's and I decided to pitch it in the garbage because it took up some space. He told me if I still had it he would have paid over $400 for it without batting an eye.
Freakies cereal boxes are big time $$$ to collectors.
So I'm sure a grading system would work with these boxes as well.

Well, that is what people collect and I'm cool with that. God knows I've spent more money on toys than anyone ever should. I have a problem with the whole grading thing. I have some Star Wars items graded, but only to authenticate them. I would never just send in a random Lando. It seems like nowadays there is someone who will take your money and grade anything you want. I want to know what make them an authority? Because they said so?
