Recommend some great 70s sci-fi/horror films?

Exactly as the title says please. I'm just now getting ready to see 'The Brood'. I'm VERY into the 'mutant monster/science gone wrong'-types, not so much the 'tech scare'-types.
(Though Demon Seed, Colossus, and Terminator are all favorites..)

I have the zombie genre pretty well covered, so no need for any of those. From the schlocky to the award winners, I dont have any preferences - Here are a few of my absolute favorites, if this helps:

The Omega Man
Soylent Green
Prophecy (Not that lame religious one, the one with the Natives and the awesome mutant bear..)
Flash Gordon
Logan's Run
POTA (The first two especially...)
Barberella
Body Snatchers (I prefer the remake.,.)
Alien
Andromeda Strain
The Thing (EITHER version..)

I know that there are SO many that I have missed over the years, I am finding out about more and more thanks to the IMDB site.
I clearly remember one that I LOVED as a kid - it was set on, or there were parts of it filmed on, a sort of cruise ship. It was like a combination of Alien and the Thing, only much more gory. I believe that they were harvesting minerals or something from deep in the sea and these 'monster eggs' ended up aboard. I have hazy memories of one of the alien/monster's eggs or the monster itself being inside of some sort of microwave oven and BURSTING -?!?
I havent been able to find ANYthing out about this film....
Oh..one more thing about this film...there was a scene on the deck of the ship where they were using this mining machine to bring up the minerals, and thats where the monster's eggs first appeared - one of the crew says something like "What the hell is THIS?" Beats me...

Not sure on your age but those are from the 80's and 90's
There are a few films from the seventies but mainly jaws knock offs or giant squids.
I'm sure somebody will know it for you...LOL

Surprisingly I don't see "Planet of the Apes" or it's sequels in that list. After all, this is the Mego forums, creators of the POTA figures. You should stake care and not displease the "The Bomb".

I also assume "Star Wars", "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", and "Superman: The Movie" are not on your list because of their iconic status... or maybe you have something about movie titles starting with the letter S.

What about "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Silent Running"? Famous for their special effects and space craft. Many of those same model builders cut their teeth on another film famous for their special effects, "Flesh Gordon". And if you loved the scantily clad actors in that pseudo-stag film, you must see "Zardoz"! I'm still waiting on a Mego figure of Zed.

While not for the faint at heart we also shouldn't forgot "A Clockwork Orange". Most people may not consider it sci-fi, but it's set in a futuristic world so I consider it fitting within that genre. On the opposite side of that spectrum is "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", but that one of those movies that required to be viewed in a large group. See if your local moving picture house is doing a showing... and make sure you wear all white.

Since you don't care for "S" movies, how about the more melodious "M" sounding names: Mad Max, Meteor, Moonraker, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Mechagodzilla, and The Unidentified Flying Oddball.

Speaking of George Lucas, why not "THX 1138"? He actually did a really nice job when he "re-mastered" that movie compared to his more famous masterpiece. The documentary that comes with the DVD is also top notch.

And speaking of Gojira, there were a ton of Toho monster flicks that came out of the 70s. I can't remember a Saturday summertime afternoon going by without catching at least one either on TV or at the movies. I recommend watching the MST3K versions. And if you are, you might as well watch their riffs of "Laserblast", "The Incredible Melting Man", and "Parts: The Clonus Horror".

1972 saw the re-release of "Fantasia", but in the new Stereo format. If you don't consider that a true 70s animated film, try "Fantastic Planet" and "Wizards".

I'm sure there are plenty I'm missing, but these are titles I have sitting on my shelf so they should be available to you through Netflix of whatever rental company you use.

That sounds like a TV movie I saw once on an oil rig. ABC played it around 1980, that's gonna drive me nuts.

TheDoLittle - Thanks for some of those! YES - 'Laserblast' - those turtle-headed aliens and that cracked-out kid!!

"Parts", eh? Sounds right up my alley.. As to the other 'blockbusters' you mentioned, yes sir, most of those are favortites - I was looking more for the 'obscure' or 'low budget' films...
(As to Godzilla, yes, I'm a big fan - I have nearly all of those on DVD..)

Palitoy - YES sir - thats probably the one!! It had TV movie-like production values for sure. This film has been driving me nuts for years. I want to say that George Kennedy or a George look-a-like played a role as well. There was some sort of monster...

FallenSaviour - Yes - those underwater monster films. I enjoy those, but the one I'm after pre-dates all of those though. (I cant be sure of the exact YEAR, but the film was filled with mutton chop side-burns, exposed chest hair, and bell-bottoms. Also, it wasnt UNDERwater per se, it took place on a boat.)

In terms of big-budget films, the best pre-SW one I can think of is Logans Run. Silent Running would also be good..

Huge fan of Italian post apocalyptic films here, these were mostly made in the late 1970s and early 80s, largely inspired by Escape from New York or Mad Max. None of them are very good but they're fun. Personal favourite is After the Fall of New York.

^ I like a lot of these as well - though most of their names escape me.

As to that YouTube version of Intruder Within, there is someone posting underneath the video that goes by 'RobBottin'...I wonder if it's THE Rob Bottin? (maybe the spelling is off...who knows..)
