Why does anybody do anything to that degree that is detrimental to their appearance, person, or being? Why do people smoke? Drink too much? Take drugs? Why do people cut themselves, starve themselves, or any of that crap? The answer is because every single one of us is human and the human animal is a tragically flawed organism. Our intelligence and own self awareness has resulted in things like the young gentleman in the picture.
Where things like this become problematic to humans as a society, is in the fact that somewhere out there, some people (probably more than you think), actually think this guy looks "cool". We just need to hope that this small sect of the population of this country, which unfortunately is growing every day, does not become the majority in our lifetimes or those of our children.
The sad fact is; There are shops out there that will take your money and do this level and worse of body modification to you. Stores that sell cigarettes... Crack houses... All we can do is educate our children and those around us about such things and teach them to live healthy, clean lives and be the best people they can be. To find a balance between contributing to the whole of society and developing themselves as individuals as well. To know the difference between right and wrong, which in today's society unfortunately, is becoming a line that gets more blurred as time goes on.
