Watched King Kong '76 on Blu Ray

Wow! The resolution difference between the standard DVD and this is shocking. I have been waiting a long time to see this, but the US has never released it in Blu ray format. Frustrated, I went looking for a foreign version that would be compatible with my player, which is NOT region free. I found one on the AxelMusic website (link below). Its a French release and only costs $14.63! The picture and sound are far and away superior to any DVD version I own. I have included a link below that discusses the quality in great detail. The only setback is the special features are in Pal, so you can't play them if your player is not region free. Too bad too, because there is a "making of" feature AND deleted scenes!!! Ah well... For the money, this was worth it just to get the movie in Blu ray. For fans of the '76 version, this is IT! Note: When you put it in, it will ask for a language and English is not on there. Just pick Australian and you get the regular American version.

That's for the info! I passed it along to my hubby.

Just kneel. It's easier that way.

LOVE that movie... Purely for nostalgic reasons, of course-- But there's a lot of love there, none the less...

Thanks for the heads up. I've never heard of that website, but that's a great price for the Blu-ray. And I'm guessing that the extras should play fine in my computer's Blu-ray player as the whole PAL/NTSC issue isn't a problem on a computer.

MIB41 you might be able to set your DVD player to be region free. Do a Google search entering the exact manufacturers name and model number with the tag line: set region free; or something like that. There may be instructions on how to set it for All Regions. I saw my friend Nick do this to regular DVD players for years by looking them up on the web. It might be true for Blu-Ray. Check the web and see.

With Blu-ray players, there are only a few region free options available at this time. And in this disc's case, the problem isn't region settings, but PAL versus NTSC, which is a different animal. The only way to view the SD extras on this disc here in NTSC-land is to either have a Blu-ray player that can convert PAL to NTSC (there are a few out there from makers like Sherwood, Momitsu and Oppo), own a TV that can display PAL signals input into it, or have a Blu-ray drive in your computer, most of which can handle NTSC or PAL signals with no problem at all.

Thanks! I have been looking into that. I have a Sony S350. There are a number of sites that claim this can be done by setting the player on standby with the stock remote, then using a All-for-one remote to send the proper codes to make the player region free. Haven't tried that yet, but the possibilities appear to be there. Here's the link.

I ordered one. Probably won't be able to see the special features but as long as the movie is there, I'll be happy.
