I recommend this non-fiction, Re-enactment TV series, as Seen On The Discovery Channel: A Haunting. Many stories are of ghosts but nearly as many are about demons and possession. In the course of the show and you get the occassional odd episode not about a haunted house. Many stories do not have happy endings or the cases are not solved and people just abandon the house or run for their lives. Some stories are from the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Seasons 1-4
Amazon.com: A Haunting - Seasons 1-4: n/a, Paranormal Activity: Movies TV
And these are the 2 tv specials that launched the series:
A Haunting in Connecticut (2002)
Amazon.com: A Haunting in Connecticut: John Kavanaugh, Tony Call: Movies TV
A Haunting in Georgia (2002)
Amazon.com: A Haunting in Georgia: Narrated by Tony Call, Jeff Fine: Movies TV
Stories are purported to be based on real events. It is a sad state of affairs when a documentary tv series is scarier than most horror films.
These episodes were outstanding:
The Haunting of Summerwind
Ghost Soldier
Fear House
A Haunting in Ireland
Legend Trippers
