We called the suede shoes "Freak Shoes," and they were popular with stoners and rockers well into the '80s.

I had the cheap Traxxx sneakers and those tube socks. I loved tube socks, the longer the better, LOL. You just can't get those like that anymore.

I had the Wallabees but my athletic shoes were Blue suede converse allstar oxfords..that by the way the blue wore off on your tube socks when you sweat...lol..I did not have the Bike noise maker...I attatched baseball cards on my spokes with clothes pins which made my schwinn stingray sound great...but then I moved up to tying ballons next to the spokes which gave a deeper growl...lolComment

Wallabees (an Australian company, by the way) brought them out in the 1960's. These desert boots are timeless! I had a couple of pairs in the late 1990's.
The ones Wee67 shows were the 1970's variation with the uber-trendy square toe, and the crepe wedge sole...

I grew up a little later than some of you, but we still had the striped socks. For some reason, they came to be known as "party socks." I still see people wearing them once in a while. I love the striped suede Adidas. Never owned a pair, but have had several pair of suede sneakers that were similar in style. In fact, my current Nikes are kind of close. And of course, I had plenty of hand-me-down ugly turtlenecks.Hey! Where's the waiter with the water for my daughter?

Speaking of suede footwear, I think EVERY pair of sneakers I owned from 1976-79 were blue suede with white stripes on the side. And, once again, not being able to afford Adidas, we are back at Sears for their Tracks label.
