Thread: Batman Head

    Batman Head

Hello everyone. I bought a Mego Batman on Spanish or Italian card back in 2006, and when I opened him, the head was covered in a tacky film. I took the head off the body and scrubbed it with a soft bristle toothbrush in warm soapy water until it was gone. This appears to have worked since it hasn't been a problem since then. Any ideas what this was? The card was still sealed when I bought it. I've read some thread discussions about an oily residue that will occur on dolls and spread through your collection if you are not careful. Are these problems normally cured with warm soapy water?

The oily residue problem I have seen is from the breaking down of the vinyl, which leads to graying of the mego head. using soapy water did not help my figure, it still had a tacky feel to it.

    Hmmmm....

It's a breakdown of the plastic, and yeah; they'll eventually turn grey and hard. I've used automotive vinyl paint on grey heads and it restored some of the pliability and colour. For a while, anyhoo.

I have STTMP 12 inch figures and they have been sealed in their boxes since new. When they tape that sealed the boxes broke down I took them out just to stretch their legs and they too had the waxy like substance on the heads. I wiped them with a tissue and it turned the tissue red almost like lipstick. I just kept cleaning them until there was no more red on the tissue. I haven't noticed this problem with my 8 inch figures.
